Introduction
Let's just think logically here. Why would the developers include Hellbourne Zeal. It increases your percentage to critical strike (lvl4 Hellbourne Zeal: 1.8x dmg) Maliken, a hero whose ENTIRE skill base is to get low health, which in turn increases chances to deal lots of hurt.
Let's peek at the Skills
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/8800/swordthrow.jpg
Sword Throw:
Early game, you will use this to harass heroes, push lanes.
Mid game, this will be used for the above, and also helping teammates escape, as well as escaping yourself.
Late game, this will be used for the above, but to mainly teleport behind the enemy heroes with your ultimate on so you can finish them all!
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/3668/swordofdamn.jpg
Sword of the Damned:
Early game, you will mostly keep this not-activated. However, if you or your teammates decide to gank, turn on ENCHANTED FLAMES.
If you are getting ganked, you turn on LIFE ESSENCE.
Mid game, you will have this on almost all the time. If you need health quickly in your lane, turn on LIFE ESSENCE and use Sword Throw into the lane of creeps, and you will gain some quick health.
If you get ganked mid-game and are laning top or bottom, immediately run towards the trees, use Sword Throw directed into the trees and teleport into them, then click Hold Position.
Late game, you will have ENCHANTED FLAMES on constantly and not have to worry about getting hurt by the effects.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/7413/hellzeal.jpg
Hellbourne Zeal: To be honest, you do not get this until mid to late game. To be ironic, your entire item build is based around this skill.
http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/2222/possession.jpg
Possession:
Early game, when level 6 you can use this to intimidate foes or try and fend off your lane. The range is very nice and it lasts for 30 seconds, so you only need to wait 60 seconds to use it again.
Mid game, you will use Possession to carry out ganks and give a boost in attack speed, as well as turn ranged.
Late game, you will have ENCHANTED FLAMES on, use Possession, then Sword Throw behind your enemies, teleport and kill whoever you like.
Enough about that, let's Build!
This skill build is probably essential for any Maliken player, any game.
1. Sword throw
2. Sword of the Damned
3. Sword throw
4. Sword of the Damned
5. Sword throw
6. Possession
7. Sword throw
8. Sword of the Damned
9. Sword of the Damned
10. Hellbourne Zeal
11. Possession
12-14. Hellbourne Zeal
15. Stats
16. Possession
17+ Stats
Start of the game:
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/2896/maliken1.png
4 Minor Totems, 4 Mana Potions, 6 Runes of the Blight
Minor totems give Maliken a nice stat boost to make him stay and farm lanes longer.
With this build, don't solo mid ever. Usually lane with another player, bottom or top lane.
Harass the enemy heroes with Sword Throw, and when you use this spell, assuming there are two enemy heroes, hit both at the same time as well as the creeps.
When you start running low on mana, use a Mana Potion. -- Keep harassing and try to initiate some kills.
Use Sword Throw when some creeps are low on health, that way you get the last hits. When you see the your lane creeps attacking an enemy creep, don't attack that same one. Attack a different one, -- different than your partner and your creeps. This way you can maximize Sword Throw kills -- most of the creeps will then have low health so you farm fast.
Early game:
http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/7320/maliken2.png
Now you have farmed somewhat well hopefully, or have gotten some hero kills, you need to get this build. Helm of the Black Legion is FIRST on your agenda. If you know you can save up gold without dying, go for HotBL, if not, then go for Iron Shield. You should sell off most of your Minor Totems too. Eventually, you will need both.
Now you can tank very easily. Go push lanes hard or jungle. You need to farm as much as you can, as fast as you can. Sword Throw is still your deadly weapon. Keep pushing lanes and killing creeps, as well as hurting enemy heroes.
You may be asking, why don't you have some boots yet? Well Maliken doesn't need boots - he can escape from any gank or any enemy push. Sword Throw into the trees and teleport, or Sword Throw away from the enemy heroes and teleport. This is especially useful against Arachna's webbed shot.
Middle of the game:
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/3352/maliken5.png
Mid game, a nice turning point. Some players say Maliken is squishy mid game, but I say he is not. You sell all your Minor Totems at this point.
#1. Mid game now, get Enchanted Marchers first. Your team will most likely initate ganks or push a certain lane with everyone, so you need Enchanted Marchers to escape if you lose the battle, or run in to initiate or kill running enemies.
#2. Buy Snake Bracelet. I have yet to fail with this item. %25 evasion is an item you simply cannot pass up. Why? Maliken's Hellbourne Zeal is what makes him so deadly. It is an important passive skill that increases critical strike. Basically, the whole point of Maliken is to utilize HZ whilst not having to worry about dying.
His Sword of the Damned - ENCHANTED FLAMES takes away health, and Hellbourne Zeal (HZ) increases crit chance. You are meant to survive battles at low health, and Snake Bracelet does just so.
With Snake Bracelet, you will survive %25 of the time MORE, evade %25 of all hits, be able to damage heroes %25 more, and tank EXTREMELY WELL.
You no longer have to worry about getting destroyed in huge battles.
--------If you don't like getting Snake Bracelet first, then get Shaman's Headdress first:
http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/549/maliken3.png
You will have increased health + magic armor, which is important for Maliken because he is meant to be inside the heart of any battle.
Mid-Late of the game:
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/74/maliken4.png
By now you need Enchanted Marchers, Shaman's Headdress, Iron Shield, Helm of the Black Legion, and Snake Bracelet.
Leave ENCHANTED FLAMES on all the time.
In battles, if you start losing health, turn on LIFE ESSENCE and Sword Throw as many enemy units as you can.
Late game:
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/1747/maliken6.png
You now need Behemoth's Heart. This will increase HP regen like mad, and let you stay in battles until the very end. You can initiate without fear of anything, and basically NEVER die.
%70 of the time, you will basically block 60 damage, and with Snake Bracelet, %25 of the time, you will not even get hurt.
You are an OP tank now. Your health regens like mad, and you don't even take damage -- and if you do, turn on LIFE ESSENCE and you are good to go.
ENCHANTED FLAMES should, like stated before, always be on.
/END BUILD
Now you need to know how to avoid ganks, how to initiate team battles, etc.
Avoiding Ganks:
With you pushing as much as you are, people will call for help in their lane, or try to gank you and your lane.
You need to check your minimap a lot. If your teammates are calling missing, and you notice, like, ALL of them are missing, then back off your lane and get back to a tower for safety.
If you do indeed get ganked, run as near as you can to the trees, Sword Throw into them, and teleport at the very end -- then Hold Position. They can't get you now, and you are safe.
Now, if you are running from a battle and are badly hurt, or theres 5 enemies verse you, but feel like you you can make it, Sword Throw and teleport away from them. I've had countless times where Arachna web shots me and I'm screwed, but I throw my sword and blink out of harms way.
Initiating ganks or battles:
With this build, Maliken will probably be the best tank on the team. To initiate, just run in with your team, and Sword Throw to weaken them and do an instant 200+ magical damage. Then if you feel safe enough, teleport with that throw behind them and get the heroes from behind. You need to have Possession initiated by now so you attack faster.
Don't be afraid to use Possession for any and every battle. Cooldown is 90 seconds, but it lasts for 30 -- so it's only a 60 second cooldown.
If your enemy is running away, Sword Throw at them to slow them, as well as teleport to them and then kill them.
Defending:
Simple yet effective: spam Sword Throw.
13 second cooldown is great, so you can do a lot of magic damage fast, as well as push creeps back.
You need to tank the enemy heroes, and make sure you have Possession initiated.
If you are dying, turn on LIFE ESSENCE and Sword Throw, and decide to run or if you are healing enough.
