View Full Version : [Network Lag] Downstream Lag.

Hello.

I am in AUS and I am suffering from what I believe to be downstream network lag. In single player I have no problems, in matchmaking using USWest servers my FPS remains stable while my characters movement is choppy. The console reports a whole bunch of assembled snapshots.

First I ran a 500 packet ping test to the server 208.115.118.200.

It came back with 235 min 363 max 238 average. With 1 lost packet.

Then I ran several tracerts to identify the node causing the problem.

This showed me that I was getting lag spikes on nodes #9 and #10.

I then ran a 500 pack ping to node #9 = 207.88.13.149

It came back with 226 min 363 max 230 average. With 2 lost packets.

That's a bad deal huh? Now I know it seems like I am ****ed, because this is an overseas thing and I have no control over the node.

However my mate just a couple suburbs over has 0 problems. He lives in the same city and uses the exact same nodes to contact the HoN server.

This makes me believe the problem has to be local, either with my computer or with the line from the ISP to my house.

I'd really like to enjoy the game, and didn't suffer from this in beta.

What can I do to get this working guys?

Cheers n beers, Jim.

PS: I have tried to upload my console log to http://tools.heroesofnewerth.com/upload.php in a zipped file containing only the log itself labeled console.rar and receive an error message.

"You may only upload files that contain console logs or crash dumps".

Update: So I have my mate over here right now LANing, we are next to each other and he isn't getting any of the choppy gameplay I am getting. Which leads me to think it's driver related.

I use a Gigabyte EP43T motherboard. Which unfortunately has no updated drivers for the Windows 7 64bit OS I'm running. Just the basic drivers it installs by itself.

:-' /

This is worrying.

Could you paste the traceroutes from your computer and from your friend's?

The strangest thing, my friend is getting no lag in HoN at all but when he runs a tracert on his computer at my place it comes back with a bunch of epic fail. He is timing out when he tries to reach the 2nd node.

A restart of his computer seems to have fixed the issue. Here it is.

Could you please try running the following tool and linking me the result? http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/

Also, if you are using any addons, please try disabling them.

Those pings are pretty normal for AU players. Unfortunately, Australia has a very bad internet infrastructure.

Sure, but I don't think that is the problem here Root. I have lots of friends in my city with half the bandwidth I do, with much more unstable carriers, who get flawless play.

I have the very best that Australia can provide, and yet most of Australia's players suffer no problems. There is something specific to me that is ruining my experience.

What else can we try?

You can call up your ISP and complain to them. It worked here in the States.

I don't think there's anything you can do, unfortunately, to solve this problem.

It doesn't really have to do with bandwidth, but more with your provider, while your provider might be "the best" (I don't really know anything about Australian ISPs) in a general way, other ISPs might have more stable connections to specific locations, such as this one.

The only kind of testing you can really do, is to hook the same equipment up to another ISP's connection.

Hmmmm. That's a shame. I'll try testing out my equipment at a friends house then, and if I'm not getting the same problem, I guess I'll have to change to a different ISP and try that out.

Thanks for your help so far, Tobias, _ and Root.
