His skills arent busted, if anything, they are a bit OP
Especially his Life Void, that skill personally needs to be toned down a bit (you dont even need tangos when solo laning, if you are low on HP, cast this on a group of creeps that are attacking your tower, you can go from 10% hp to full in seconds)
Mainly I usually go for Mekanism, Refresher, and Bloodstone (dont recall their ingame name equiv), along with Phase boots (or BoT, but I prefer the extra armor and phasing), and a couple of bracers to start off with.
With Life Void and his Ult, this hero can tank extremely well, and survive ganks like no ones business. Combined with a powerful slow, and a powerful DoT, hes a good pusher / ganker / support

Honestly, this warlock is what the dota warlock should be. Sure he cannot heal allies, but hes got spells that are all actually useful.

^ Agreed. And I even liked the DotA warlock too, but Dota Warlock should be more like this
Item choices. he is a bit weird as his ultimate is not that amazing.. if anything more for the stun and a quick blast of the malphas flame. many go with a restoration stone to cast two malphas. I say that is a waste of 200 gold and exp down the drain.
I would say enhanced marchers, sac stone, and a mock of brilliance.
why mock? good damage, the damage it does helps with life void giving you a constant heal.
After that I would say maybe a behemoths heart or a shield breaker if noone gets one. But then I am pretty bad with this guy.

I've been messing around with Hellbringer a lot lately, and I'm having trouble settling on a good item. Sac Stone doesn't really do much for him aside from stat boosts...Hellflower is alright, but again, there isn't much utility from it. Codex seems like the best choice for him, as with Void you can pretty much full heal instantly between a creep wave and a Codex shot at a hero. Not to mention the crazy damage it can do to Devourer, or any hero with a Headdress. The biggest question is, does using Void on a hero with no magic armor at all put it into the negative? I haven't had a chance to really test it, and it doesn't increase the damage of his DoT. But, if it does increase Codex damage over 800, I can't think of a better item for HB.

Totem and post haste are pretty much always solid choices on any support hero. He has pretty good survivability with his slow and heal so huge HP items aren't really necessary (other than 1-2 nulls or bracers). Early ring of basilus gives you good mana regen and armor for you and your demon/creeps. Building totem gives you solid MP regen and an imba disable when it's finished. Post haste gives you map control and good farming speed. Puzzlebox is another great supportive item for mana burn and truesight. Refresher is just fun. :)

Personally I level his first and second skills, getting ulti whenever possible. I tend to rush bloodstone and then after that it depends on what I need to counter the other team. Try to get solo mid if you can.

Why not life void? Allows you to play with no life regen early game.

you need like one level of life void, let's face it the only purpose of this skill early game is the regen. Imo 5.5 secs of regen is more then enough, we don't need 10 secs that early, especially when creeps are clashing by tower.

Why not life void? Allows you to play with no life regen early game.
Because life void is a late game skill, and when I get my ulti at 6 I want to ensure I have a kill with a good enough slow. My starting items are generally a sobi mask (+50% regen) and 5 branches. I rush a Sustainer and grab bloodstone shortly after. If you can't last hit well enough to grab a lifetube by the time you need it, grab some runes of blight instead of sobi mask(can't remember the HoN name)
Play with your enemy and then release 3rd skill, ulti, codex -> full health and enemy is dead.

I guess none of you played Dota on a high level of play? :D
Dagon or Radiance are not good, try going for Book 3 (Puzzle Box), Meka, or Orchid (Hellflower I think), Orchid gives you +60 damage + tons of attack speed + Amp and Silence

I am a big fan of hellbringer. I typically level the dot up as fast as possible and then alternate between lifevoid and the slow when I can not level the ult. I typically go for the Hellflower, its components are great while building it and then once you get it you have pretty much unlimited mana to cast life voids and dots.

I tend to get 1 lvl of void then dot/ult followed by slow before coming back to void. Early-end, lvl 1 void is a way to heal for really cheap... If you get other levels of it early, it just costs too much to be very useful. By endgame, you max out it out so you can keep it up on everyone for the -magic armour to synergize with your aoe heroes... I build hellflower, and by those midlevels, its mostly or fully built, providing the needed mana regen.
Early I tend towards 1 bracer, phase boots, and hellflower. After that I like to buy armour or magic armour items, to improve the efficiency of his healing.
Maybe I should go totem, but hellflower is very attractive to level up with, as it's much stronger along the way.
