View Full Version : [Network Lag] Reoccuring DC Icon Problem

Hi everyone. Like a lot of the other frustrated people on this forum, I'm having the DC icon problem. The thing is, I've cleared the problem before, but it comes back every time there's a new patch. Also, I've disabled mods, and no difference occurs. I followed the guidelines of what this person did:

http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=185772

Although it worked the first time, it no longer works. What I do is: uninstall, delete hon.exe from my registry, restart, reinstall and then re-patch. I believe the problem is with the patching, and I think the only way to fix it is to download the newest version instead of patching, which is EXTREMELY ANNOYING, because that means downloading a 500 mb file every two weeks...

--

Let me list the symptoms of my problem though:

- I can get into a game fine, my account is fine and I can see my friend list fine
- I can use practice mode completely fine
- During a live game, I'll frequently lose control of my hero and I'll see the DC icon. Sometimes, I'm sent immediately back to base, other times I'm forced to watch my hero die to creeps or something like that. When I send commands such as right clicks for movement, my hero will move in that direction once the DC icon goes away. However, my connection with the game flickers so much that it's still unplayable
- I can still watch the game go on while I'm experiencing this, so I think I can still receive data? I'm really not too sure.
- I'm also disconnected from chat, and the things I type aren't sent

I'm usually on Ventrilo with my friends during games, and my ventrilo is COMPLETELY fine. All other Internet processes are fine. I've already contacted my ISP (I live in Ontario Canada, if that means anything), who has said that my connection is fine. There have been no changes in modem, router, computer settings or firewalls from when I have been playing normally. It started around a couple months ago.

==

I just pinged the USE server (173.193.201.231) and got:

Packets: Sent = 500, Received = 500, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minmium = 33 ms, Maximum = 214 ms, Average = 52 ms

That seems fine to me, so I don't think it's an issue in reaching the server.

s2 or anyone on the forum PLEASE HELP, this problem has really made a dent in my HON playing. I find myself extremely frustrated dealing with this, and I feel like there should be a fix for the problem...

Thanks in advance.

Update: I downloaded the newest client without patching anything and the problem still persists.

This is EXTREMELY ANNOYING, if anyone has found any fixes PLEASE PM ME

Bump... problem's been going on still. I tried following the advice from someone else's thread to give HON a higher priority through QOS on my router webpage, but I don't think my router has that option.

The thing is, HON was COMPLETELY fine a couple weeks ago, but it's only as of late that it's been a problem. There have been no changes on my end, which leads me to believe that something else changed...

Any feedback, s2? Please?

Edit: My router model is Dlink DIR - 615, and I'm on a motorola modem. I have the latest firmware for both.

I apologise for the lack of a reponse so far. I just checked the console.log you updated, and it doesn't show you playing a game. Could you please reproduce the issue, then close the game (after finishing it) and then upload a new one?

I was playing yesterday and there seemed to be NO lag after that recent patch. I'll post again if the problem resumes, but as of right now:

I take back my thanks... that was a short lived victory. The new patch 2.8.0 RUINED it, it was laggy as hell just now. FIX THIS PLEASE DAMMIT, THIS IS SUCH A TEASE

Sorry for the delay.

I am seeing tons of problems due to mods. Disable those.

Also, could you do http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/wiki/index.php/Network_Quality_Diagnostics?

That's okay, by now I'm used to delay from HON (ha ha...)

There's definitely something wrong, could you please run this? http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/

Do you by any chance also suffer from the Nvidia black screen issue?

Myrmiston

I'm posting the "major" and "minor" parts (the red and orange problems).

1) Major Abnormalities

Your DNS resolver returns results even when no such server exists http://n3.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/arr_err.gif (http://n3.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/summary/id=ae81b058-11219-562bdac1-34db-4e6a-b36c#DNSNX)

2) Network bandwidth measurements (? (http://n3.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/info_bandwidth.html)): Upload 15 Kbit/sec, Download 420 Kbit/sec
Your Uplink: We measured your uplink's sending bandwidth at 15 Kbit/sec. This rate could be considered quite slow, and will affect your user experience if you perform large transfers.

3) Your ISP's DNS server returns IP addresses even for domain names which should not resolve. Instead of an error, the DNS server returns an address of 8.15.7.107, which resolves to None. You can inspect the resulting HTML content here (http://n3.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/uploaded/id=ae81b058-11219-562bdac1-34db-4e6a-b36c/key=nxpage).
There are several possible explanations for this behavior. The most likely cause is that the ISP is attempting to profit from customer's typos by presenting advertisements in response to bad requests, but it could also be due to an error or misconfiguration in the DNS server.
The big problem with this behavior is that it can potentially break any network application which relies on DNS properly returning an error when a name does not exist.
The following lists your DNS server's behavior in more detail.

www.{random}.com is mapped to 8.15.7.107.
www.{random}.org is mapped to 8.15.7.107.
fubar.{random}.com is mapped to 8.15.7.107.
www.yahoo.cmo (http://www.yahoo.cmo) [sic] is mapped to 8.15.7.107.
nxdomain.{random}.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu is mapped to 8.15.7.107.

Tell me if you need anything else

Please post the link to it (the result), that way I can look over it all.

Anyway, your problem appears to be your upload bandwidth, this tool reports it as being 15 Kbit/sec which is WAY too little. What is your bandwidth supposed to be like? As in, what are you paying for?

I don't pay for the upload bandwidth, but I think it's reasonable? I'll get back to you shortly. My main qualm is that other games and internet applications seem to work FINE. Even when there's no other internet usage in my home I still get the DC icon, but sometimes when everyone's using the Internet, I'm fine... It's extremely inconsistent so I can't really plan around it either.

Here's my speedtest if you wanted to see my bandwidth from another server.

Your upload speed is very low and I personally see it as the major factor with the issues you are having... if not the lone cause altogether. Let me review the results of the tests with some other techies and we'll see if we can't come up with something.

Thank you for your patience.

Well, you can see that already at the second hop (which should be your ISP) you're getting huge spikes, most likely caused by your high uplink buffering.

Myrmiston
03-19-2011, 06:34 PM
So... should I just leave it at that? The reason for my sporadic DC icons is because of my upload rate? I find this hard to believe and I still feel that there's another reason involved. All other games that are seemingly more internet-intensive than HON work fine on my computer with no problems. Also, my Internet and computer have been under the exactly same conditions since I got HoN, but the problem only started happening midway. Are you SURE there's nothing else I can do or is there anything drastic that you guys have changed?

Sometimes, this problem does not occur at all, and it's really up to chance. The mass amounts of updates makes it hard for me pinpoint exactly when I've been getting the DC icon, but I do want to say that the problem is not resolved.

Tobias
03-19-2011, 07:58 PM
At the time of these tests, your upload bandwidth was too small to play the game properly. I don't know if that has changed at any time, but if you can play fine at times, then it probably does vary.

But I do know for sure that your upload bandwidth is a problem, that however doesn't mean that there can't be other problems, but it's impossible to troubleshoot for as long as you're suffering from this one particular problem.

I'd just like to let you know that since the last patch this has been happening again... extremely frustrating.
