About this mod
This mod adds a small encyclopedia window to the Clan & Community Panel (the "F6 screen") allowing to quickly access detailed information about heroes, items and chat terms anywhere in the game.
This mod targets players transitioning from DotA by translating between DotA and HoN terms and pointing out changes, as well as those who never played DotA e.g. by providing basic builds for heroes and decrypting DotA names.

The encyclopedia content itself (source files (http://www.mediafire.com/?ojneum3mjuy)) is a work in progress; there now are builds for all heroes, but I'm still grateful for any additions, suggestions and corrections.
The source files now also include a program to compile the mod from the source files, basically allowing you to alter entries or add comments for your own personal use. The program requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (download if necessary: x86 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5)/x64 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=B44A0000-ACF8-4FA1-AFFB-40E78D788B00)) or Mono equivalent (http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page).
Since S2 Games has started working on a "Item & Hero Compendium available from the Main Menu and the CC Panel" (see here (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=197102&postcount=1)) the development and feature enrichment of this mod has been basically discontinued for the time being; it will however keep getting updated with any sent-in content and for every new patch to bridge the time to the release of this "compendium" (when the fate of this mod will finally be decided).
Note that this mod only works when using the English language settings.

That's really friggen cool. I'm impressed.
I didn't know it was possible to show tool-tips for skills/items/heroes when it's not the current hero. I'm sure Bard would really want to see your code for that: he told me he wanted to add those tooltips to his own unitframes for ally heroes.
would be nice and really more handy if it comes to flash version also ( would be a lot of easier 2)

I didn't know it was possible to show tool-tips for skills/items/heroes when it's not the current hero.It actually isn't - using k2's means of code only (well, I just wasn't able to either); I had to prepare the tooltip information myself.
would be nice and really more handy if it comes to flash version also ( would be a lot of easier 2)Well, S2Games already released a website basically containing the same hero (http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroes.php), spell and item (http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/items.php) information, albeit HTML/Javascript only and not Flash.
The purpose of this mod is to provide this information at the press of a button (f6) in-game, e.g. if you quickly wanna look up the mana cost or stun duration of an opponent's spell.

Damn dude. How many years did it take you to do that O_O
Why do you have two separate mediafire links in your post?Well, I wrote myself a program to do it, development was spread over the course of multiple weeks, scaling with how much fun I had playing HoN during the time.
The first link leads to a rar-file which contains the source files this program uses; if anyone wants to make suggestions / changes additions to the encyclopedia, these are the files he wants to work with (not the data my program compiled and put in interface_en.str).
The second, bold link, under "installation" is the actual working mod.
I'll make it a bit clearer in the post, I guess.
If there's enough demand I'll try releasing a slightly polished version of the program so people can add their own personal encyclopedia entries and compile them into the mod.

Maybe even make it community driven, like a wiki? Could it update from an online database?"Community driven" sure sounds good, though setting up a wiki and having it sync with the downloadable mod file sounds like far too much work for this simple mod. For now I thought having this thread would be good enough.

Hey, I just saw this great mod and I just gotta say it's awesome! I've been waiting for something like this for a long time.
There is one function missing though that might be useful, a function to add your own notes in the different articles?
Anyway, just a thought. You've done an awesome work and thank you very much for this mod :D
Good mod, I'd go as far as to say that this should be a default retail feature.

PS : Why not asking the Premium Guides Owners to make you Tiny Guides (Skill Build + Items Build) and Hypertext Link for their Heavy Guides
Perhaps a Stupid Idea, but i think it can be incredily powerfull like this =)

There should be possibility in game to edit and save item guides/builds by self. Just like notepad.
Nice work, a great idea this will help alot of new players.
Maybe add a little bit about the hero role eg: great early game ganking hero should roam about, or Great support hero you should support your team as much as possible and always team up with a buddy sometimes this hero often wards the map in competive play. Etc.
I'd be willing to help update the encylopedia.

Awesome work. I always thought it was strange that every custom map in warcraft 3 had basic information about the game in the quest menu EXCEPT DOTA. This should've always been in Dota, so it would definitely be an improvement to make this a permanent part of HoN, which it should be.

Updated the mod for 0.1.44.0
If you search for Zeus, you will find Rouge Knight (Sven)Fixed.
You should add in the info from the AltTab (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=2788) guide. That guide is mainly for starting items which I usually have left out in the builds so far since it's usually a matter of taste and play-style and it takes valuable space in the tiny window.
There should be possibility in game to edit and save item guides/builds by self. Just like notepad.I don't really want to do that since it'd have to be based on cvar, the stored data would be rather volatile (lurking around startup.cfg somewhere) and it'd be pretty hard to share notes/builds/guides.
As stated before I plan on getting an application out with which people can compile edited encyclopedia source files (http://www.mediafire.com/?dzygmnwymgd) directly into a usable mod file; if there is demand and I can find time for it, that is.
Maybe add a little bit about the hero role eg: great early game ganking hero should roam about, or Great support hero you should support your team as much as possible and always team up with a buddy sometimes this hero often wards the map in competive play. Etc.
I'd be willing to help update the encylopedia. That'd be great! For now I'd suggest you simply download the source files, add/edit entries and then send me the edited files by pm or post them here.
That obviously wouldn't work in the long run and more people; we might just hijack a few wiki pages (maybe on honwiki.net?) for easier collaborative working then.
Sent you a pm Not,
and you can download http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2k0aywankmz if you want the sd lister. Also delete resources037.s2z as that file has both sd lister and encyclopedia.

Should be changed: calls Maliken a "her", and his ult is very similar to Dragon Knight's ult, and teleport/nuke is like puck's illusory orb. Plus he has a huskar-esque do more dmg if low on hp passive.
Also you should add nymphora's extra ability when she has staff of masters.

Also you should add nymphora's extra ability when she has staff of masters.Maliken's text was a bad copy from Nymphora, "fixed" it now: "There is no counterpart to Maliken in DotA."
Adding extra abilities isn't that easy the way the mod is currently laid out; it knows hero entries, item entries and general entries (text + up to two images). Unless there'll be more heroes breaking the rule of "4 abilities per hero" I'll just keep it at that comment I put there (I fixed the channeling time values though).
edit: "fixed" in the sense of "next time i upload" ;)

Notausgang, do you have any plans to expand beyond the heroes and items (ie basic DotA/HoN concepts such as creep blocking, creep pulling, jungling, etc.)? If you do I'd be willing to pitch in a helping hand. I have taken a brief look at your at XML source doc and can read into it more if I can help that way or if your program puts that together for you I can just help by writing down descriptions in a word doc. Great work so far man.

Apparently they're adding something very similar to this if you check the "what we're working on" topic =)Yeah, I noticed.
This basically means I'll stop developing the mod (adding scrollbars, releasing the compiling program (was actually half-way done with that), etc.) other than keeping it up to date with the game version to bridge the time until their version of it comes out. Depending on what exactly this "compendium" will offer this mod might turn into a mod for the compendium itself, completing its functionality.
Anyway, thanks to everyone having offered help! But before throwing more time into this I'd suggest waiting for S2's creation ;)

The encyclopedia content itself (source files (http://www.mediafire.com/?22dneovy3ah)) is a work in progress; thanks to Sonic_Boom there are now builds for almost every hero, but I'm sure there's a lot more game terms to add. I'd be grateful for any sent in or posted suggestions, additions or pointed out mistakes.
The source files now also include a program to compile the mod from the source files, basically allowing you to alter entries or add comments for your own personal use. The program requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (download if necessary: x86 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5)/x64 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=B44A0000-ACF8-4FA1-AFFB-40E78D788B00)) or Mono equivalent.
Since S2 Games has started working on a "Item & Hero Compendium available from the Main Menu and the CC Panel" (see here (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=197102&postcount=1)) the development and feature enrichment of this mod has been basically discontinued for the time being; it will however keep getting updated with any sent-in content and for every new patch to bridge the time to the release of this "compendium" (when the fate of this mod will finally be decided).

bards ui and this use the same resource file called cc_panel. you would probably have to combine them. i can probably do this for you if needed by tomorrow night. right now im going to bed.
looked at it real fast and combined them. haven't tested it although it should work.

http://www.mediafire.com/?q5myiwzgmquThis won't work because you've messed up the subdirectories in the s2z and you forgot an angled bracket.
I'm thinking about writing a mod manager to resolve these kinda things in the future :-/

Notausgang
09-22-2009, 07:38 AM
Well, most of the builds I did already had a line containing a recommended skilling at the end; e.g. "Skills: 1. Maledict, 2. Heal; Stun once on level 1" (top priority maledict, secondary priority heal; + some comment). Having the plain order of skilling written out doesn't seem very educative to me and just takes too much space (so you'd have to put it on extra pages like you planned).

09-22-2009, 09:44 AM
well i created a whole new section when i get home from school ill send it to ya u have to search the section by Skill then the first 5 letters of the

Skill Scout

MaxGhost
09-22-2009, 05:09 PM
5 letters is fine as long as it's case insensitive. You could even add support for the whole name AND 5 letters.
Also, you could do just 's' as a prefix and/or '/s' and 'skill'...
Notausgang
09-22-2009, 05:11 PM
Well, the hero names itself obviously are already taken for the hero entries, but any variation should work; also, all encyclopedia search is case insensitive by default.
I'm pretty sure most of the special characters should work too.

In the next version of this i am adding a FAQ bout heroes and anything plz pm me if you have a question u want to add to the FAQ.
Also I’m adding more search methods to the skill builds
Finishing and finalizing the skill and item builds (all heroes will be done)
Adding a Icon (similar to bardUI) in the game interface that allows you to click it and there u have your encyclopedia
(Going to try to add a save recent searches format) what this will allow you to do is that say u search accursed (skill build) and u forgot the skill build then the next time u click a button that tells you ur recent searches (most likely up to 15 searches saved)
(soon the skill and item builds will be combined with a scrollbar addition)
FEATURE PLANS By Notausgang: some things I have heard from Notausgang and other sources are that the devs are possibly going to implement something like this mod into the game so further construction for this mod may stop by next patch (depending on weather the devs release this or not)
(since S2 Games is working on their own compendium for the f6 screen, which will possibly replace the mod).
Something page-based instead of having a scrollbar if the scrollbar cant be figured out (page based may just be better don’t know) I will continually update this mod (with builds and such)
More updates on weather I can implement some of these things or weather Notausgang will be able to will be coming as soon as I hear more :D
Please give me input on what else you think should be added, what should be taken away and so on.
Hope u like the (hopefully made additions to this mod)
PS: i have put very little thought into this and i did it during school (Lunch) so if anything u think should be added to the mod let me know and ill think and talk to Notausgang about it :D

I'd suggest to change wildsoul's item build.
Usually you go for max bear and give phase boots to the bear (not steamboots). You have then 1 buff to activate on your hero ever 40 sec and the rest of the time you can go controlling your bear and using phase boots for following someone and rooting him!
Notausgang
09-29-2009, 06:09 AM
Yeah, since Steamboots stopped giving attack speed bonus (which was pretty sweet for the bear's passive ensnare) Enhanced Marchers are definitely preferrable; most of the builds in the current encyclopedia version have not updated in regards to the new items - any suggestions are welcome. (Sonic_Boom swapped boots for some, but the new items aren't used yet)
Either way, will release the next version tonight if i can, to make Sonic_Boom and SHJordan stop nagging :P

1) issue: if you have bards ui, then the encyclopedia's pop up information gets covered by the bottom bar of bards ui bar.
solution: simply make the encyclopedia information be on top of any other menu openners in the F6 screen.
2) suggestion: have it show suggested results based on what entries there are. like
"suc" would show succubus pop up as a suggested search and you could select it if you wanted to. sometimes u dont know the exact spelling.
3) also add an index view mode where you can browse every entry... instead of only being able to access it if you know of it to begin with and type it in the search field.

like the suggestions but the problem is that there is no scroll bar for a index and the suc thing for a redirect i dont think u can setup a link inside of it (or a link like figure)

The search isn't really a search, it just matches specified words with their entries. Adding every partial possible would be extremely long and tedious (unless you'd like to do it yourself).
gwho1
10-05-2009, 04:31 PM
the layering order for bardUI covering up the info can be fixed easily right?
oh is partial search suggestions done by linking each combination to an entry? couldn't it be like "suc" would suggest succubus, but suck would immediately get rid of the suggestion? so it would work by mathcing each letter, rather than something more advanced like google when you mistype something and it says "did you mean". that is, you would have to match every letter in order with an existing entry for the suggestion to appear; you couldn't make typos in the middle.
i'm sure a scrollbar could be added since the F6 area already has a scrollbar. but maybe its harder for a mod rather than the imbedded original HoN UI.
couldnt the "link like figure" be set to be the equivalent of pressing "enter" of the search bar? just combine the whats text is entered (actually the similar entry) in the search bar code and the enter button code. so rather than a link it would be similar to pressing enter, like how it does already
actually i would be up for doing it. i wanted to learn to make mods and do programs anyway. anyone willing to mentor or just nudge me along the way?

Updated with content for the new patch. Upgrade mandatory for .s2z users, optional for .honmod users.
I would like to make a small, tiny little request:
Could you maybe add some sort of "personal notes" option to the hero information? Where one could write in notes like own item builds, skill builds and so on. I often forget the good builds I had for some heroes and it would be nice if i could write them down ig and they would be there each time I search for the hero i wrote em on.
The most common response to this kind of a post would be:
"Write your builds down on paper noob!!!11"
You write builds for 50 heroes on paper and we'll see how u like it.
Also writing them in a notepad wouldn't be the best idea because I would have to alt+tab all the time.
And since I already use this encyclopedia and since finding a specific hero in it would be super easy - please add a function like this to it.
Sonic_Boom
10-19-2009, 11:39 AM

Allowing data to be entered and saved in-game is pretty much impossible, unless one's fine with severely abusing cvars for this purpose. I suggest editing the source files (well, basically means using notepad) and compiling them into a mod file yourself; you can find all you need in the "source files" link in the first post.

Been a bit lazy; will update it for the new heroes this weekend.
And alternative / better builds are always welcome; many of these are just straight from Sonic_Boom without anyone good at the game checking them :P
(I do find myself replacing a lot of builds when playing new heroes where the build in the encyclopedia is just basically recommending Post-Haste, or similar)

^ good stuff.
will u also consider the problem where the info get cut off by bards UI?
in the f6 screen, if u have bards UI, his little tab thing is on top of the encyclopedia info. if u can make the encyclopedia on top of IT, so that u can read it, that woudl be great

oh ok damn, it gets annoying whenever it occurs didnt know exactly what was causing it :/
The source files now also include a program to compile the mod from the source files, basically allowing you to alter entries or add comments for your own personal use.does that mean, that i can edit all and can write my own words into the encyc? i tried it and i cant edit only 1 f*** file >.<

Yes, it means you can arbitrarily edit the encyclopedia. I haven't included a new version of that program in the last source files though, if I remember correctly; was too lazy and didn't think anybody would use it :P
I'll include it in the next version again, which will coincide with the next game patch (from experience possibly this weekend).
You can find the custom part of the hero and item texts in the encyc.xml file; the tooltips are read from the game though.

You have to apply the mods with modman.

Finally updated this with all changes up to 0.1.62! Sadly barely any build changes and no builds for the newest heroes yet, but this is to come in the next weeks.
From now on updates to this mod may be downloaded via the built-in auto-updater of the mod manager.
Also now supplying the compilation program again.

It's still lacking solid tested builds for most heroes, even though there are some rough item/skill guides for most now. Please do contribute!
Will add the two things you mentioned, Doccool.

It would be nice if you had mirrors for files, for instance Mediafire is apparently down at the moment and I can't download the mod...

You can use this link (http://newerth.com/notausgang/encyclopedia/encyc.honmod) as alternative download for now, which is the auto-update url as well (though I wanted to add a download counter to it and I need to fix a bug with the autoupdate feature of modman).

notausgang, this is one of the coolest and most utile mods on the forums right now, and id really like to help with it since it seems like a lot for one person to do. if you feel like throwing me anything you need (be it a long list of stuff you dont have builds for or just small stuff) id be happy to help with it. i play just below competitive level so i promise i know what im talking about :)

That'd be great!
Actually my next step would've been to go over all the heroes again and spice the articles up a bit since I found a lot of what's in there to not actually work out. For some there's just a list of 10-20 items which obviously isn't really that helpful; what I'm aiming for is to cut down the lists to the key items and add a comment to each explaining what it is intended for (e.g. that the Shrunken Head on Tempest is meant to prevent an enemy from cancelling your ult; or that a Frostfield Plate on Glacius/Behemoth/Slither is meant to be used with their ults; etc.).
However, I haven't come to master every hero yet, so that'd take quite a while if I just did it on my own.
If you want to help just go ahead and download the source files (http://www.mediafire.com/?yw3ktmzt225) (also linked in the first post) and check out the "encyc.xml" file, which basically contains all of the content of the encyclopedia. You can send me any additions/changes you'd make or just send me an altered encyc.xml file. For easier reading and editing I suggest using Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/) for the syntax highlighting.
For the newer heroes like Forsaken Archer, Engineer and Deadwood there are no builds at all, and some of the existing stuff is just plain bad (e.g. it suggested to level Flick last on Pandamonium...). Also, feel free to start rewriting the item lists if you are motivated. Any help appreciated! ;)

I'll get right on it, i have way too much free time :)
Edit: As I find things that I don't know how to fix because I dunno how to write XML ill just post them
Zephyr's skills need to be linked to the proper tooltips, not Chen's skill names

First changes done ^_^
http://www.mediafire.com/?mxktzykdm1z
Went through all the hero item and skill builds and added/fixed where i saw fit. obviously no one agrees on everything, but i tried to give a good representation of what skills/items that hero would usually get, with skill builds going up to level 5 since early game is most important.
In the items section I added a few things here and there, clarified some active abilities, etc.
lemme know what i can do next

Great work, junglebadger! Looks like a lot of good changes. Will do my best to merge it with my working copy and release it this weekend.
By the way, you forgot the hero types for Thunderbringer, Pyromancer, Tempest and Legionnaire (which probably are something like Nuker, Nuker, Support / Initiater / Ganker, Tank). Also, an article on each of the types would probably be in order so newbs can look up what those terms mean.

feh, knew i would forget one of those, i kept forgetting them and going back and doing them so it stands to reason i missed a couple, although you got those ones under control :) should i write up an article on each of the types in word or what?

Mod update!
- Content updated up to the current patch 0.1.65.0.
- Contributions by junglebadger integrated: these include updates to nearly all hero builds, hero classifications (ganker, carry, tank, etc) and some miscellaneous comments; I'm pretty convinced we now have good builds for every single hero - thanks a lot!
If you are using the Mod Manager you can download this update by right-clicking the mod in the modman window and choosing "Update this Mod".
If not, just use the updated links in the first post of this thread, as usual.
@junglebadger: yes, articles on each for the encyclopedia; you can use Word, but keep in mind that in the end they'll have to fit into the encyclopedia window and colours are the only formatting you can use.

I just updated this mod from my previous version i got months ago, and now the encyclopedia tab is gone! I tried to reinstall it but that did not work.
Well, would be nice if it would give item tipps of the Premium Guides :p

Busa: S2 is still planning on releasing their "compendium" which probably aims to provide roughly the same service as this mod. Until that is released I will update the changed ability tooltips about every second patch, but content-wise there is not much to be done, I think.
st3vo: You must be doing something wrong!
iBaer: In this current state this mod just aims at providing a basic build per hero; premium guides usually contain much more information and aren't really suitable to be read in game.
King_Soaring: When you mouse-over an item entry's icon it will show the item's tooltip with the total cost in the top right.
Some heroes are missing like engineer, forsaken archer, witch slayer, deadwood and more...could you add them? I mean even their ability descriptions are missing in the character choice screen during match ><

Urr, are you sure you are using the newest .honmod? Even the slightly outdated .s2z version already has all those heroes; you must be using some pretty ancient build...

*sadface* wanted update badly
I am currently working on an in-game encyclopedia. A button will be added between Menu and Scores.
This will allow you to play and consult the encyclopedia at the same time.
Though, I encountered a bug. When I click search, HoN would just freeze and I need to close it the hard way. As soon as this is fixed, I'll let you guys know.

I for one hope that you do not discontinue this mod now that the compendium is available in-game as S2 only show the Recommended Items in the Compendium I like the ability to add my own Build and comments a Hero Maybe that should be the focus of your mod I use to use this mod while playing in-game to help me remember previous or favorite builds.

agreed,
the ingame compendium doesnt even explain the various heroes abilities, just gives a brief description
MaxGhost
03-27-2010, 12:26 PM
Idejder recently mentionned in a HoNcast interview that they'll add ingame tooltips to the compendium. They'll also have usage stats and a hero build helper (let you level up and put items on a hero outside of a practice game). That might end this mod.
Notausgang
03-27-2010, 12:48 PM
... or at least severely change it. The hero compendium still does not offer items nor a way to search for abbreviations or DotA names.

I think you should add some autocomplete goodness to this mod if you have the time. Quzzap figured out a way with Test++ :)

PLEASE DO NOT DISCONTINUE THIS MOD. THIS IS PERFECT.
Just think of S2's hero compendium as a general guide, like what comes with the game in an instruction manual, whereas THIS ADDON is more like WIKIPEDIA.
user editable, and because of that INFINITELY more useful for the pragmatist.
Please update this to work with the new release of HON, I am begging you!!!

i never played dota and whenever i would get stuck with a "wtf omg new hero i dont know how to play" i could just search it and get an idea of stuff.. great because you can look at it in the hero selection screen, the game and lobby.. i love it! and miss it! :*(

It's still on my list, but I'm a bit busy at the moment and still hoping S2 implements tooltips for their hero compendium, which would save me a lot of work every release of the encyclopedia for a new patch (currently I'm trying to generate all the tooltip data myself, which usually means I need to go through all changed or even possibly changed tooltips by hand to doublecheck).
