Hey everyone,

I'm a Game Art student and this year we got the chance to do a project of our own choosing, so I chose to do one that involves Heroes of Newerth because the game deserves a little artistic love.

The goal of the project was to get a feel for the style of the game, and then design a handful of new heroes that would fit into the game. Below are the results of the project, a total of 10 heroes of which 4 "new" designs. For progress shots and commentary, you can scroll through this topic or take a look at the project's blog.

Rules for using:
Every hero I finish will come with a transparent version. Please note me if you are interested in using it and I will send it to you!

Please read before you comment:
I've had a lot of suggestions for my works and they are all welcome, but do think about what you're going to say. I will obviously not take suggestions like "needs bigger boobs!" seriously. I'm doing concept art, not wanking material. I have also had comments that said that my poses were a bit boring. This is fair enough, as indeed they are. However, those poses are completely intentional; I'm doing concept art, not illustrations. Look up any kind of concept art of knights (http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=knight+concept) or warriors (http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=warrior+concept) and 99 out of a 100 times you will see a simple standing pose (despite any kind of awesome movements the character might make). The purpose of concept art is to show the overall design of the character as well as possible so that modellers or other artists know what they're working with. There can be some form of movement, but nothing extreme or full of action. Please take those things into account when you comment, thanks :).

This is really good. I hope you finish the others quickly. IT's also really cool to have an artist that can actually do this, since a lot of people are looking for concept art that isnt around. This will definitely make up some wallpapers and the like in the future if all of your work is this good.

And also, that last paragraph is kinda... Out of left field? I really don't know if people care that much about it, except those trolls who use it to bug the crap outta you.

Thanks a lot, I sure hope so! If people like the end results enough I'll see if I can make some wallpaper versions out of them :). Also, I guess you're right, I've removed that bit.

Edit: Update; did a little bit of refining, moved the right leg, sketched where the tongue is going to be and I'm not too sure about that other arm yet. Working on it. I'm aware the real Slither doesn't have black claws, but I thought it suit him so I used a bit of artistic freedom there.

The right arm placement looks good where you sketched it.

Faster than that, I think this took me 2 hours in total so far :). I've been working on it on and off, going to start again now. If anyone is interested in seeing me work on this project live, let me know and I'll set up a LiveStream show for it.

It's also good to know which heroes people would like to see. My choices are obviously a bit limited so I'd like to go with the heroes people find most interesting.

Hey, thanks :). I study at the HKU (Utrecht School of the Arts in English), I'm only a first year student though, art wise I'm pretty much entirely self taught.

I am amazed by your work, great job. I surely will use some of your artworks to obtain more renders for creating signatures.
Is it possible for you to seperate the render from the background so we do not have to render it?

And I think you left out some highlights on the skin of slither, just feels like it misses just one more layer, or maybe that is just me. amazing work, looking for more from you :)

I'd hate to see it being used the wrong way (if that happens there's a big chance I'll stop giving them away for free like this). Also, please show me when you've used it, I'd love to see it!

I like it!

try using some of the special renders when you're done painting, they can go a long way to getting rid of remnant brushstrokes in a few minutes work.
my tablets broken atm, but heres 2 mins 'work' with 1x Chrome & 1x Plastic-wrap renders, immediately adds a slimy feel. could play around more, but just wanted something quick :P

AvunaOs: Thanks! I'm a girl though ;p. Thanks for offering to help me with the blog as well, but it's really not that I don't understand them, it's more that I don't really like working with them, heh.

Kingaby: Hey, thanks for the crit, but that's really a matter of taste :). I actually like it when there's some brush strokes still visible (gives the picture a painterly feel) and I try to paint manually as much as I can. I really dislike using filters or really anything that gives the program control over your painting (such as layer modes, I always try to paint on a single layer if I can help it).

As for layer modes and filters, they are valuable tools to get the look you want faster. Its still you in control, you're just using a different tool. No different to the grime and texture brushes you used in your background really!

good luck with the 30 heroes thing!

I searched a little bit on the internet about your work. and i did get amazed by your drawings.
it's like i love dragons and fantasy beasts, but specially dragons
coz i do feel identified with dragons and your art blowed up my mind ♥

there is something about all of that art.
like if there were love involved, and a passion for it.

innorruck: Not really, game artists can be illustrators as they may need to paint whole environments or scenes for the game, but a game artist in essence is a designer, while an illustrator just illustrates. That, and being a game artist is much more broad because it also includes modelling, texturing, animating, pretty much everything about a game that is visual. It's a game artist's job to get the right feel and style for a game and work it out in concept and later on to actually "dress up" the game that the programmers have created. Although it's not entirely my field, I think an illustrator is more bound to his/her employer's ideas.

Kingaby: Oh I do know the value of layers and modes (even filters) and I do use them, but as little as I can. If I let the program do too much, the fun of painting gets lost for me (as well as my pride in the artwork). The background was a texture, by the way :). That's what I do use layers and modes for, heh!

AvunaOs: Why thank you very much :). I'm really glad you enjoy my artwork like that and I'm most definitely passionate about what I do, it's good to know you took notice!

Mmh, rather not in my thread. There are tons of art sites you can sign up to to post your work on though, or make a blog for yourself :). If you want me to review your work you can always send me a PM.

True there is alot of details on her, and alot of things that has to be looked at. It's easy to make a faulth on her.

Update on Soulstealer, it's progress is slower than I initially hoped for, but ah well. I had difficulty getting his torso to look right (not too long or too short) but I think I've found a decent length.

the only thing i find a little small is his face. (maybe becouse im based on his portrait, were he has a big mouth)

Thanks AvunaOs, I did make his head a little smaller, but that was intentional. A smaller head makes the character look bigger and more impressive/intimidating and that's the look I'm going for :).

I also realized I added a bit too much smoke underneath Soulstealer, I'll reduce that when I get back to it.

Great work, but Slither's tongue is very 2D and it makes it look as if he's sticking it out the right side of his mouth while its length suggests it's coming out directly forward. Minor detail, though.

Hey kronofogde, that's pretty cool! Love the purple with the greens! I had a little trouble reading the name though, perhaps try making it lighter and remove the black outline (much like the "smith" in AvunaOs' signature).

ok almost done with this guy, hope you dont mind i used you interpretation considering there was no concept for slither released ;f I fixed some of the muscle definitions where your hands and legs were extremely muscular while chest lacked any definition at all, also made the arms smaller to not give him the impression that he can glide in air. And lastly made his legs bigger so that they will match his center of gravity, so he wont fall down foward when standing ;]
Will upload a finished version tomorrow, teh scale pattern takes up a lot of time to do ;]

Looks pretty cool slocik :). I like the muscle mass. You might want to place the legs a bit further apart though for balance.

Could you size the image down though or make your own thread for it? It's a bit.. present.

when you make 3D models in Zbrush or mudbox, can you later in inport them to Maya or 3Ds max for doing a character rigg and some animations, or can you do any animations of those models at all?

becouse if you can i relly need to start working some in Zbrush, btv the model looks great.

Allso the artwork looks amasing. but i gtg need to take a better look at that blog :)

Anyway like your ss more than the in game one, you shcould try making devo, he seems like a fun hero to do ;]


Also ofc you can rig it and animate, if your pc can handle 3mln polys on bones ;D
But for real, nothing stopping you from using a displacment map or normal map, and taking out a lower subdivision version of the model, that would be no problem, and thats how every movie is made nowdays ;]

zbrush is hard to master a year is minimum to get it right, also a perfect anatomy knowledge is a must ;] 2 years of time isnt that much if you dont got any experience in drawing that might not be enough ;f

Oi, don't go callin' me lazy.

So, I've managed to get three sketches done that are somewhat workable, ignore how finished/unfinished they are.

PRO'S & CONS:

1. Decent pose, suits Valk's usual stance and shows the wings well, but looks a bit too stalky I think.

2. Dynamic pose, suits an agility character and Valk's movement, but does not show the character very well.

3. This one I think shows the character best, I always picture Valk as a bit of a playful/challenging girl and I'll make the expression echo that. However, it's a bit of a boring stance for her type.

What do you think? I'm not saying any of these will be the final, they might all change or I might go for a mix between the best ones, we'll see what happens.

Oh, I also kept the boobs a modest size because like it or not guys, gravity and huge jugglers just don't make agility possible.

I like the 1st and 3rd poses. It's difficult to say which of the two I'd want you to draw because I think both are really good in different ways, which you've already stated. In terms of just a profile, I think the 3rd one would be nice. And then the 1st pose would be awesome for putting her in an environment type dealio. Just my 2 cents even though I have no knowledge on art.

Hey you don't need to be able to draw to see what works, just a good pair of eyes :).

I mostly agree with you, I think I'm going with the third but spice it up a little. I might move the arm down and spread the legs a little more for a stronger strance. She's going to be a lot of fun to color, though! Going to try a new technique for this one :).

yeha the third one is the best, but you can always go with a more iconic thing, like a valki in a pose just split seconds after throwing her spear, very dynimic and done from side should look cool ;f

Slocik: Meh, I was going for a spear-throwing Valk at first, but after doing a bit of searching I realized that pretty much every piece of fanart for Valk has been done in that exact pose. In other words; it's slightly overdone. Me being a sucker for original things I just felt the urge to do something different :).

Shiroo: As I just said, the spear-throwing pose is very much overdone so I'd rather not do that. Also, the stance she has in the third sketch does not suggest action at all so raising her arm as if she's about to throw something will look very strange ^^. Regardless, I'm glad you like my art and thanks for following this thread :)!

Maybe try to make her post with her spear in #3 but add some edgy invisibilty to her like she used her ult. THe effect would be the glas style invisibilty, dunno just an idea.

On #3 I would change the direction of the spear, which means that it is on the ground near the foot and then goes further away, thus the arm would be nearly stretched.

Sye; That's a good idea, I might play with that. As for the spear, I already had it standing in the opposite direction in the sketch, but it throws off the balance (the entire picture leans forward then). I might draw it straight up, I think that works.

Also realized that she actually has a shield, which is a shame since I kind of liked that relaxed arm pose. Ah well.

I was realy suggesting center=top of spear i think it would be and amazing view...you could even give it a lenz effect like a semi fish eye. Take it or not its just a suggestion :P and btw tnks for the link never seen that render till now :D

well the stance as you said is settled but the shield positioning in 3 seems a little bit unnatural...i would deepen the far tip of the shield a little more so it gives it a more 3D feeling.

The armor will hopefully make it more interesting ;). The "boring" pose is intentional; this is concept art, not an illustration. Look up any kind of concept art of knights (http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=knight+concept) or warriors (http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=warrior+concept) and 99 out of a 100 times you will see a simple standing pose (despite any kind of awesome movements the character might make). The purpose of concept art is to show the overall design of the character as well as possible so that modellers or other artists know what they're working with. There can be some form of movement, but nothing extreme or very action-y :).

Hey Lhune, i love your art. About valkyrie's pose i like the first because of the way the shield seems to be "completing" the arm and it shows the face of the shield better or the third cuz it seems to be the way to hold a shield according to the arm's position.

I've also done a few sigs with your slither art. Personally i think someone could do much better than me (i'm a photoshop newb):

Hey ImDisaster, thanks! :) Those sigs really aren't too bad for a Photoshop-noob ;). The advise I'd have for the first one is brighten the red of the eyes, or just keep them white. The red seems a little out of place, as does the green of "slither", I think it would look better if you color picked the highlight of Slither's skin and made the text with that color. You need to unify the colors you're using, y'know? :) The second one is better in that regard although I would've picked a different font for the text, and perhaps mess around with the layer modes and styles a bit. Other than that, good job and thanks for using my works, I'm glad you like them!

Sorry for the slowness of my updates guys, school and social life have been stealing my time but I'll finally have time to continue to work on Valk in the coming days!

Okay, update. I had a pretty damn hard time figuring out her armor from the ref pics I took ingame, so I just tried to be creative here and there.

Things to be changed/improved/added:
- Shield pattern
- Leg plating/feathering
- Possibly her hair
- Possibly something to cover her stomach
- Maybe a hair piece

1) right leg is missing its "wing" (just in case that wing goes back, if it goes to the sides then its fine)
2) i'd like to see a different shape on the shield, not just a diamond shape (i know its not finighed yet, just giving an opinion)

@ Avuna; Yeah I'm aware the leg piece was still missing, heh. I'll add it today. From the references this is simply the shape of her shield. I'm probably going to play around with it a little because it's a rather boring design in the game, but I will stick to the overall shape of it. I don't take criticism bad :3. Unless it was meant to be offensive or degrading or something.

Yeah I was thinking that. I'm still going to change her hand, although I don't think the spear should be longer than her body, so I'm leaving that as it is.

Actually it's funny you should mention the head piece, because she indeed seems to have one in the game, but not on her avatar pic.. I was kind of torn between the two. Do you reckon I should still add it?

I'm not one of those people, so my art will, if I can manage it, be functional or at least make as much sense as I can put in. An example of taste/preferation would be, for example, people who put gravity-defying boobs or impossibly huge swords on characters (FF's Cloud), just because it looks great to them. It doesn't to me ;). So hence. What looks good to you might not look good to me and vice versa :).

But even if this is supposed to be real, the hand would be further down, because it actually takes more effort to raise the hand so far to hold something instead of holding it at stomach level. I would expect her hand to be at around the same height as the chain mail. Aside from that, awesome drawing ;)

Thanks for the advise guys, I'll see what I can do about that arm position and spear :). I have something in mind that I think will look better. I also noticed that her eyes are a bit too far apart and I'll up the contrast a bit on the background, it feels too soft/palette. As for the buttcheek, I might've given her a slightly large butt ;). I'll decrease the size a bit but I do think she'll have quite large legs and butt muscles with the moves she makes.

Sorry people, I just can't seem to get a break. Other assignments and commissions have completely swamped me.

As for an update on the project itself, I finally received feedback from my superior and he found that I was being too illustrative and too aimless, so I need to sit back and determine what exactly it is I want to achieve by doing this project (I need to break it down to specifics). The number of heroes has also been brought back to 20 existing ones and perhaps 10 of my own, because I just won't get around to doing any more.

Thanks for the appreciation so far guys, it's very motivating :).

Alright guys, a little update on the project. It's been narrowed down dramatically.

Basically my superior found that it was too "vague" to draw concept art for a game with no specific goal, so we discussed the matter for a bit and came to a new project idea. I will of course keep the drawings I made (and finish the Valk picture if I can get around to it), but the amount of existing heroes I'm going to draw has been brought down to 3 for each faction (3 Legion and 3 Hellbourne).

The "new goal" of the project is to get a feel for the style of the game and try to find out what makes a Legion hero a Legion hero and a Hellbourne one a Hellbourne hero. Once I've done that I will design 5 new Legion heroes (perhaps alternative avatars?) and 5 new Hellbourne heroes in the same style.


So, here's my new to-do list. To clarify; I will scrap Slither and Valkyrie because they are not very accurate for the style of the game.

- 3 existing Legion heroes (choosing is gonna be difficult!)
- 2 existing Hellbourne heroes (since I'm keeping SS)
- 5 NEW Legion heroes
- 5 NEW Hellbourne heroes

Suggestions for hero choices are very welcome. I want to do at least one human for each faction.

Let me rephrase that; I want to do at least one hero per faction that is actually human (for as far as any of the HoN heroes can be human). Think of Valk, Nymphora, Hammerstorm, Jeraziah, heroes that are recognizeable as "normal" human beings (skin tone doesn't matter much; the Dark Lady qualifies as human).

That was more difficult to explain that I initially thought it would be, hah. I take it people will understand now though.

[KiIl]dreadweed: Heh, thanks :). For a tablet I would always recommend a Wacom since it's by far the best brand you can get, but I suppose when you're only just getting started an alternative brand will work just as well.

On a different note, I've recently noticed that my artwork is being used by various people for writing guides and making wallpapers and the like without linking back to me. This is rather disappointing, I put time and effort into making the art and I would appreciate recognition in return for that. I may take down the transparent versions and only give them out to people who specifically ask me for them so that I know where they'll end up. We'll see.

Right, well. Since it's now my job to stick to the style of the game I'm going to keep the exaggerations in my artwork. Yes, that includes big boobs, impossible armor and weaponry. It's not my preference in style, or taste, but it's still fun to work on :).

Yeah the brown coloration is what I had in mind. Turns out his armor isn't quite this shiny, I'll see what I'm going to do with it. Orange is a bit too bright.

Heh, thanks Sye. You're right Avuna, I've kind of decided for the sake of simple appeal that I will keep the bronze/gold coloration for his armor.

I changed his position and armor slightly as it all seemed connected rather awkwardly. I hope that's been fixed now at least. Also gave Horatius his ears, lol.

about nymph, i would agree (in part) with loli. since she is a fairy, you should increase her wings if you're gonna keep that body proportions. (and her legs seem quite big)
hope you get what I mean... her body must respect fairy's
altought its your interpretation/concept, i think it should have a common fairy reference

I used Nymph's animation as a ref; http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroview.php?hid=10 . The wings really aren't much bigger than this. Her legs do need to be shorter though, and I'll see if I can make that face a tad wider. I think it's mostly her hair making it look long, though. I definitely need to work on that.

I'll try painting it even rounder then when I'm home :). I'm not too sure myself, I've seen an extremely wide variety of head shapes so either way is possible I think. I'm going to try a rounder shape to see if it is more visually appealing though (and if it works for the character). I may also move the ears around because I feel they could be causing the "stretched" look of the face.

Considering her hair, the ear placement, and the angel of her face, it looks too tall for a human-like face. Nymphora is suppose to look younger, but not childlike. I'm not saying it should change by a lot, but its enough for me to notice it to say the least.

Granted you may not be going for realistic.

I really like your work, but the coloring seems kinda odd, dunno why. Feels like they're plushies, still good tho, i couldn't possibly do better.
