View Full Version : "Mini-lag" Problem

Hello, lately I have been experiencing a dc icon at the left part of my screen while I am playing HoN. It occurs every 5-10 seconds or so and I lose control of my hero for that short period of time. I realize that there have been many complaints about this on the forums as I have been researching it to try and find the problem. I have tried every solution I could find on the forums and nothing has worked. Recently I was talking to S2Tobias and he had told me that it was me lagging. I don't understand as to how I could be lagging when I recently upgraded to a gaming desktop from my old laptop and upgraded my internet from 3 megs to 10 megs. The "mini-lag" spasms go away after a couple of days but they always seem to come back. Only lately have I been experiencing this problem. Can anyone help? :pand:

Could you do http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/wiki/index.php/Identifying_Lag_Type to see what type of lag you are getting?
If it's graphics, please read the graphics problems part of the wiki. If it's network lag, please read the networking issues section.
I'll move your post into the right subforum once you've identified your lag type.
I also need to see your console.log.

I'm not very smart when it comes to computers so I might need a little help. I think it's network lag but I am not sure. What button do I press to get my console log while in game?

To get to your console in game, press ctrl+f8. The same gets you out of it
Enter "host_drawFPS 1" to show your FPS
Enter "host_drawFPS 2" to show your ping
(no quotes)
Your FPS should be staying at >= 60 and you want your ping to be low (preferably under 150).

I'm having a little trouble trying to upload my console.log

My FPS seems to stay around 40 and my ping is usually around the 20-30's. I'm having a problem trying to resize the console log to where it can fit onto this forum.

Please read this page: http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/wiki/index.php/Elementary_FAQ
It should explain how to upload it, with regards to the last screenshot in the "How do I upload my console.log?" part, there is a visual error, ignore the red square, but read the description instead (this will be fixed soon).

What is your CPU usage like during gameplay? Tab out and look at your Task manager when in game. Are there any other processes besides HoN using a lot of cpu?
Spider_Bro

Okay so I joined a practice game and I alt tabbed and now I am looking at the processes tab of Task Manager. HoN is using the most memory and CPU than anything else followed up by ventrilo which is not even close to the memory or CPU. Do you think clearing the cache on my modem would help?

I doubt it.
How much ram does your system have and what's your total ram usage in game? There could be a thrashing problem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrashing_%28computer_science%29.

My system has 4.00 GB of RAM. How do I check the total ram usage in game?

Sorry I am not trying to be bothersome but do you think my RAM is the problem?

Press alt tab when in game and look at the task manager (press ctrl+alt+delete).

Heroes of Newerth is using 1,226,11.. memory (Can't see the last couple of numbers) I don't know if that is the ram or not.

Also, I get moments of delay every couple of seconds when there isn't a dc sign up. I don't understand what could be the problem :/

What's your total system memory usage in game? I know what HoN usually uses :). Just read it from the performance tab.
Spider_Bro

Do you by any chance have a program called Team Viewer? >.< Lol. Umm. Alright so I am at the performances tab and it says under Physical Memory (MB)
Total - 4095
Cached - 1168
Available - 1183
Free - 60
There is like a graph that says Physical Memory Usage History and it's just a bar that's constant going horizontally. Sorry I'm not very smart when it comes to computers :/

Could you try doing http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/wiki/index.php/Network_Quality_Diagnostics? You can see http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/wiki/index.php/Elementary_FAQ#How_do_I_conduct_a_traceroute.3F for help.

I don't understand what it's saying to do in the first link that you posted but I followed the instructions for the second link and it's in the link that i posted above. Thanks for helping so far

I see one lost packet. Could you do a traceroute to 173.193.201.231 (same instructions, just not masterserver.hon.s2games.com) and also paste the last part of:
ping -n 500 -l 1300 173.193.201.231

Then when I put the ping -n 500 -l 1300 173.193.201.231 in the cmd, it gives me: Reply from 173.193.201.231: bytes=1300 time=49-60ms TTL=114.

Well, you got 2 lost packets in there, which isn't ideal, but it depends on what the frequency of your lag is. Also try http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1043281.

I had a friend that did that this for me before I even posted on the forums but I think we may have changed it back because it didn't work. I can try again with both of them and I'll tell you if it works out, if it doesn't do anything... Any more suggestions? Also, I noticed that while playing WoW.. I usually stay around like 14-17 fps while my friends around around 60. I recently had bought this computer from newegg.com and a weird thing had happened. At first I couldn't even play HoN because it was like playing in slow-mo on this computer because it said I had an NVIDIA video card and supposedly I was supposed to have an ATI Radeon I think. I even downloaded alll the drivers and nothing happened. I was about to return the computer when then next day I turned my computer on and it said I had an ATI Radeon Video card. ??? Do you think maybe re-installing all my drivers could fix this problem?

I am debating on whether or not to ship this computer back and go back to my old laptop until I find another computer that I can purchase.

If your friend is on the same network, does he lag?
Spider_Bro
12-18-2010, 11:38 PM
He isn't on the same network as me, he was a friend that I play HoN with online. He got on teamviewer and showed me how to do it. I am on my laptop right now and I haven't experienced any disconnect signs.
IAmRoot

Well, if you go to his house to play, that should determine if it's your laptop causing the problem or not. If it only happens at your house, it's a problem with your internet, otherwise, it's a problem with your laptop.
Spider_Bro
12-19-2010, 09:26 AM
I don't go to anyones house to play HoN, so it must be my desktop because I don't get the disconnect sign on my old laptop. When it said I had the NVIDIA video card.. I had installed all my drivers and then did a system restore because we thought we did it wrong because we had a catalyst cd which is for ATI Radeon. The same online friend that helped me with the registry keys said he would help me reinstall all my drivers today if that was the problem. I think deleting the MCSS line from the regedit place actually made the dc sign worse. I had to restart HoN twice in game because I got the Dc sign for a straight 5 minutes right after deleting it and it has never happened for that long before. Do you think the two missing packets could be the problem? If so, how do I get them?
Spider_Bro
12-19-2010, 05:37 PM
Actually, I played a game earlier on my laptop and I did get some disconnect signs. Not bad at all though. I get some moments of delay also and I'm starting to think it must be my internet even though I just upgraded... I have lots of spikes in my ping on ventrilo and on WoW I am usually at like a 220-240 ping with around 10-16 fps. But, is there anyway that I could get those two missing packets just in case?

Do you think a network card would fix my problem?
Spider_Bro
12-20-2010, 09:15 AM
Sorry for posting so many replies but I played a little bit of WoW on my laptop earlier and when I play on my laptop I am usually at around a 60 ping.. while on my desktop, like I said earlier, I am around 200-300 ping

Please do not be amd sir. It is obvious that you are conencting your PC to network wrong, or your router is bugged. How do you connect your Laptop to Internet, and what about desktop.
Spider_Bro

I think I found out my problem anyways. I went to pingtest.net and it told me that anything above 0% packet loss should cause stuttering in online games. I usually have around 5-15% packet loss and I am going to my ISP's store today to talk to them about maybe getting an upgraded router or having them fix their stuff before I change services.
IAmRoot
12-27-2010, 10:33 AM
Hmm. I only saw 2 lost packets. You must have done that first ping test at a time when your modem was getting a good signal.

I called the tech support for my ISP and they told me that they did not have enough bandwith at the moment and they were in the progress of upgrading their equipment. She had said that they had upgraded about 200 parts already and needed about 5 more which could take a week or two. I had asked if the lag would be better if I upgraded routers and they told me it wouldn't and that it is their equipment and not mine.
IAmRoot
12-27-2010, 11:26 PM
Ok. The lag should be fixed when your ISP finishes upgrading their infrastructure.
