Hey guys, ever since the orb change I've been way confused with how to gear him up.
I usually go:
Steamboots
Shroud (I know its a bad item but shroud crits hurt, badly. and it gives me good stats i think)
Whispering helm -> stack ancients
charged hammer
savage mace
I know the power or Harkons but imo, Puppet REALLY needs the lifesteal. I can't farm as hard with harkons since I lose health and I can't sustain myself in teamfights either.
Thoughts?

i dont like lifesteal on him, it makes him a bit glass cannon (which people say is weak i say is just harder to play) but i rush a alchemist getting it fast as really helps especially if you can get bloodlust. after that you can farm pretty easily try (without having it off cd for too long) to use your alch bones on the lizard-people-things leader as much as possible as he gives over 300 gold. if you are in need of survive get a nullstone, frostfield plate instead of going for pure damage items as these will make you last longer and as an int hero they actually seriously buff your damage anyway. finally harkons lets you 2 shot people, people tend to be unable to hurt you much in that time.
and if your having a really hard time farming, a great item is hellflower. its buildup is really easy for people who are having bad farm and it increases his damage and utility in a teamfight.

Shroud isnt bad if you can farm it fast and the enemy isnt well coordinated. Whisp helm is must too for jungling/stacking.
But after that really recommend trying hellflower on him. It builds easily and puppet is one of the few heroes who can benefit from all its bonuses. After that its always symbol/shrunken for survivality. You might want to go directly to shrunken after whelm in some games... i think puppet is very squishy without it. Puppet is all about farming effectively but helping your team too when needed - he can do alot early/mid game unlike other carries. Always carry tp.

Disagree with hellflower. Puppet has very little need for extensive mana regen as he has no farming skills and his abilities have relatively long cooldowns so he should last teamfights manawise. Attack speed and intelligence is great, as is the silence, but for a relatively expensive item it doesn't do much for his damage and more importantly offers no survivability.
I usually play puppet for fun, rice all day and come out with shroud, harkon's and riftshard's and 1 hit people. And at my low level, pretty much viable.

No farming skill really?
But I agree with the rest of your post.

How about a resto stone? 200% mana regen is good, +5 hp/sec is decent, +6 int is good, +42 damage is really good, +10 attack speed is good ... and yeah, double ultimate!
Personally, I prefer :ShrunkenHead::HarkonsBlade::Hellflower: ... shroud becomes pointless after 20 mins, and hellflower gives him a nice silence + damage amplification that can take carries down so easily with harkons.

What I do:
Go mid (or lane with a sitter)
Starting items: Healing pot, 2x +3 int, 1 +2 to all stats.
Get marchers
Finish steamboots
Get 2x talisman (Go talisman first if your getting ganked slightly)
Level 7 = start ganking if mid, farm in between. 2x talisman + steamboots on int gives you excellent auto attack damage.
Then after this its your choice:
- Support: Puzzelbox + sheepstick
- Glass cannon: Charged Hammer, Harkons(if farm is good)/ savage mace (use when they have zeph or are building a wingbow)
- Enemy are noobs: Shroud, Charged hammer etc.
Furher points:
- If your in defense lane, bones can be a good first item! Mid I don't really like.. because you'll be ganking / farming lanes more. And using it on catapults all the time isnt that worthwhile. You'll want to use it on vagabond leaders / catman champions
- If your micro is good, puzzelbox will be beautfiul. Especially if you get lvl 3 puzzelbox and your opponents are invis chars. The reveal + your auto attack + minions + their low hp = pwnage.
- Im not a big fan of life steal, but I've been seen people do wonders with it.
Several points:
- You NEED extra int for the crits to hurt more (increase your base damage)
- Attack speed is second most needed (you do more crits)
- Survivability... you can get items for this, but I suggest A LOT OF PRACTICE.
Not a hero for the faint hearted.:pupp:

Alchemist Bones if you can get it before 8-10 minutes
Steam Boots / Power Supply
Shrunken Head
I usually fill my inventory with a power supply, tp stone, boots, and a single null or bracer since I usually get the stats for last hitting early game.
Then harkons + riftshards and game's over.

The thing with going shrunken right after steamboots is:
I find myself not doing enough damage even if I am magic immune.

He meant farming abilities, active ones, like Madman, Soulstealer, Torturer and Panda has.
Next time I play him, I think I'm going to try Shroud -> Shrunken -> Sheepstick. Sheepstick looks so wonderful with +35 base damage and the amazing cc ability. Although it wouldn't surprise me if I went with Harkons instead, because a Harkons Shroud ambush is <3

Try just rushing Harkons right after steamboots. It actually works really well if you get it in a good amount of time and use it to pick off squishies in one puppet show.

Starting 603 gold:
:RunesOfTheBlight::HealthPotion::MarkOfTheNovice:: MarkOfTheNovice::MinorTotem::MinorTotem:
Those last me until my next item:
:HelmOfTheVictim:
And then I grab :HungrySpirit: to finish my:
:WhisperingHelm:
Next, build :Steamboots:
Followed by :ShrunkenHead:/:AssassinShroud:/:Thunderclaw:
After all of the above are completed, your late game items are:
:HarkonsBlade:
:WhisperingHelm:-->:SymbolOfRage:
:Thunderclaw:-->:ChargedHammer:
:Steamboots:-->:PostHaste:

The way I build Puppet is:
2x Runes of the Blight, 2x Pretender's Crown, 1x Minor Totem
Then I get Steamboots, as I feel, that the HP and attack speed are better than the damage, and porting... Then I get some Fortified Bracers if you need some more HP, then, most of the time, I get a Shrunken Head. Harkon's Blade is the best DPS item for him, but Helm can be gotten instead. But I feel that the Helm has better buildup, and offers better farm, but Harkon's is definitely better in terms of DPS.
Then I tend to build Geometer's Bane. After that I might get a Charged Hammer, and most of the time I save gold for porting, or buybacks.
But I would consider Hellflower, Kuldra, Savage Mace, SoR later on...

My most successful non-harkons game with puppet had this build:
Steamboots
Shroud (nooby items ftw)
Icebrand > Frostwolf's skull
Kuldra
Charged hammer
Puppet is one of the few heroes that benefits HUGELY from all three stats (since his agi nerf) so the +25 all stats on skadi is wonderful, as well as being one of the best orbs. Sheepstick is more than just the best active in the game on him too cos it gives him big dps from the extra int. Charged hammer just makes the whole thing rape.
Steamboots
Whispering
Shrunken
Dps (Geo, Hellflower)
This...
steamboots, geometer's bane, charged hammer, whispering helm, SM, rift

ghost marchers(NEVER EVER GET STEAMBOOTS,the pros buy steamboots since they can trust their teammates to save them on a gank,or team fights,but in pubs,NEVER.)
fortified bracelet + power supply(core for me on all the game heros)
shroud:a very good escape mechanism.

I wouldn't advise ghost marchers, You will run into a dps problem when your attack speed is almost nothing and your +damage is too high.
Take a look at some common early items for puppet : Shroud, whispering helm, shrunken head. Two of these items give zero attack speed, with minimal on the shroud. You will end up hitting for decent numbers, but your overall dps is going to be less than optimal. Not to mention later on when you can afford the hp drop by switching steam to int you will gain the +20% base damage bonus for it via whiplash.
Ghost is good for chasing, but you have 2 disables. It's also good for running, but once again, you have 2 disables. Steamboots will almost always be the best choice for this hero. And if you are planning on getting shroud anyways, you have the movespeed covered.

You realise most of your builds will get you killed in 3 seconds? STR Steamboots aren't enough for survivability, pick up a nullstone or a shrunken or something. I still prefer harkons over whispering though, because of ancient stacking nerf and especially with shroud for better OHKO capabilities.

Boots (depending on the amount of initiation on the other team - PKey > Marchers) -> Power Supply -> Nullstone -> (Lifesteal if I'm the main carry) -> Sheepstick/Shrunken Head -> Sheepstick/Savage Mace -> (Harkon's if I'm NOT the main carry) -> Geobane/Hellflower/Charged Hammer/Whatever.
Going directly for Bones and Hammer (don't forget an EP) is like adding an ammunition belt to the water gun - funny and colorful, but straight useless and it will fall apart after the first two shots.

Charged hammer 1st item on any hero is always bad.

Your Harkon's there is way too late in my opinion...
