View Full Version : Lament of a noob. Will I ever play HoN again?

So I really like HoN, but after SC2 came out I've switched and not looked back.
However, occasionally, when my ling rush fails or I die to a single void ray, I think about HoN again and wish I could go back...
And then I remember how (especially having not played in a while) my team mates will tell me I suck and ask me to leave.
And then I remember how they nerfed my favorite character Nymphora.
And then I remember how they nerfed my second favorite character Fayde.
(I am not a high tier player and I don't care if they were broken in tournament play or something; doesn't low tier play matter too!?)

So I ask any of you in a similar position seeing this, what would make you come back to HoN? (at least regularly.)
For me, the only thing that would bring me back is a Goblin Techies port. They're so much fun I'd just have to come back and play with them.
However, the message I got from this game is that it is not for fun, it's for serious and if you suck then you don't matter; go home. I've seen people say they shouldn't port goblin techies because no one would use them in the tournament scene. Well, that's the kind of mentality that has pushed me (and I believe others like me) away. Maybe we're not wanted here anyways.
I like HoN but I feel rather unwelcome here. I like playing serious but sometimes I just want to have fun. I know S2 Games is taking steps to try to make the community more welcoming... but come on!? Where are the fun modes?! Wtf mode!? Different maps!? Maybe some single player challenges or teams challenges against the computer. Spice. It. Up.

Ah, but what does S2 care. They already got my 30$

tl;dr: HoN is too serious and there's no support for low skilled players.

Check out the Training Grounds (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/forumdisplay.php?f=43). You can find tons of support for newer players there, such as (all pulled from the first page):

[LN] Ludus Novicius; Novice School (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=78313) (a clan for helping new players by pairing them with more skilled mentors)
HoN Fundamentals; a guide (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=156877) (a written guide explaining basic skills everyone should know)
Ask a question, get an answer (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=142191) (just as it sounds; go here if you have any single burning question you need to get answered)

...as well as tons of threads from people just like you.

(and as a side note, :nymp: has actually gotten a slew of buffs recently!)

yeah nymph is pretty sweet now.

also i play a lot of sc2 as well, but i switch back and forth. if i have a bad hon streak, ill play sc2 for a while and vice versa.

that way you can stay up on both games, and don't get overly frustrated with either one.

No gtfo noob, but really, you should get friends to play, or at least try to make some new ones. Even if you lose 70% of your matches, playing with friends is awesome.

Hmm, thanks for the nice replys. I'm still hoping for goblin techies but I guess I won't give up on HoN just yet. Also, I'm not -that- new to the game; I'm just not that great.

All things withstanding, I tried to join a game today, was called "trash" and got kicked (presumably because of my wonderful k/d ratio. Not that it matters that I usually play support). Then they whispered me with more insulting remarks. Apparently I couldn't report them because the game never started so there was no recorded match ID. But whatever, you guys were nice so that makes me feel a little better.

You're always welcome to try out Savage 2. It's exciting, fast paced and frenetic. Our tight-knit community is really helpful about training new players. It's a good game to relax to since it's so easy to pick up and play (although it is hard to master).
