While this is certainly better writing, it doesn't affect the grammatical correctness of his sentence. My suggestion was the smallest change possible that fixed the grammar - "The Christian Cross" vs "The Cross" vs "the Cross" is merely a style issue with subtly different interpretations in each case, while "the cross" is just wrong.
