I was moving my gear around in a random game for laughs and giggles and I accidentally sold my Runed Axe by lifting it and dropping it on my Gold bar. Is this intentionally made so that you can sell it like that?

Made me laugh rather hard when that happen, and cry a little inside.

It's been remarked on before... I don't know if we have confirmation on whether it's a bug though.

A pawning system would be nice... :)

You sell your item to a pawn shop and can buy it back for a little more later. This is useful sometimes when you bought an expensive item first for farming or something and then need some other item later for ganking.

I can relate to the OP. Doesn't happen often though. Just be more careful I spose.

I could see S2 implementing something like that. The sellback feature they added is quite nice.

Is it intended in the mechanics to be able to sell (even without dropping on your gold count) from such long distances? I personally like the feature, as it makes early game items more plausible if you don't have to go out of your way to sell them back, but it definitely changes things quite a bit.
