Can we call it variance or is there a high chance I'm currently an awful player ?
I used to play inhouses with some, now quite renowned, players in france so this is the level I want to get back to.
How do I improve beside the usual watch replays, learn to juke etc ?
I'm a casual player.

It may sound stupid to the OP, but this is fact.
You're more than likely going to hover around 1500 if you play alone as you will never always be on the better team.

o.o
Do you guys mean improving, or simply for better rating ?
It teaches you how to play in a competitive team setting as long as your friends are half decent. But no matter what you will all get better

Lol i've given up doing games with my friends as I win more often with random people who I can actually set up a lane combo with. My friends aren't into the competitive side.

I have no idea how you could play this genre of game without friends and enjoy it. I can't stand 9/10 people I play with.

I have the same problem. I have a very hard time to stay above 1650. I usually play alone, and when the other team are 4 or 5 friends i cannt win a match even i do my best. The problem is above 1600 most of players play with friends or clan mates, so playing alone means to be on the Hellbourne side with other 4 people you dont know at all.

I have seen plenty of people with 1600 above who do not play with friends or clan mates. The key is just choosing your game carefully, not to play with 1400ish teammates and do not play when you see the other side has 3 or more 1600 + friends.
That's how I do it :)

If you want to win more, just play Legion whenever possible. Hellbourne loses far more often, because:
1) Host is usually on Legion side and statistically he/she is better that some random player
2) Legion side often has several friends.
Personally I play Hellbourne mostly and I have less than 50% victories no matter how hard I try or how well I play. It does not matter when your team has two feeders and a leaver.

I always play with a friend ... which is the only reason why I still play. Most of my losses are because of a newb friend but the other friend I play with is as good/better than me - though our PSR says different. Regardless we play a lot of Hellbourne and we win plenty.
I will still say that it is statistically safer to be on Legion's side.

Back when I was semi-good at dota my friends hated me when I hosted games because I insisted on playing -sp lol.
I've never liked playing with one, let alone several friends, it feels like stomping which doesn't feel good to me.

I got as high as 1880 playing with only pubs; right now I think I'm around 1850 (few bad matches).
It's not impossible. Avoid noob only games. Avoid bad hosts (hosts that locks himself and three others right before he autobalances, Hosts that swap players manually at the last second to move the high KDR people to his side, etc). I've actually had a host swap players manually to make his win % around 85 and then start the match. You don't get a leaver's mark for leaving during countdown.
Check your teammates kdr. If they are all below 1.0 and everyone on their side is above 1.0, you'll probably lose for various reasons.
Be a leader. Take hold of the team and keep them organized. Don't rage; stay positive. Teams often lose not because they are worse, but because no one wants to take that leadership position, or because they give up after just one 5v5 loss.
Make smart hero choices. Even if you prefer playing the carry, if you already have one or two, pick a strong support instead.
Edit: Sometimes, you're going to get bad games with leavers, feeders, etc. Don't freak out or stick on them. Play until the end the best you can and try to learn something from it. If losing tends to put you in a bad mood, stop playing for a bit: being in a bad mood during the next match will make you play significantly worse.
Learn to trust yourself and never trust pub(well unless they show that they're worth your trust lol.)
You're more than likely going to hover around 1500 if you play alone as you will never always be on the better team.
I play solo 95% of the time (pub wise).
Play with people who you know are reliable.

My friends & I have a hard time finding a game, we make 1700+ rd games, and people still join and leave cuz 3 of us are 1800+ and the other 2 1700+ as we are unsure where to "find" competitive games per se.

I kept played hellbourne just because I liked pink spot....over 80% losses (I dont play with anyone I know).
Started playing Legion today and 8 wins in a row so far and still playing...

Trying too, although not exactly sure where to look. The default HoN channels don't work too well with the constant spam.

playing with friends is probably the only way to stay above 1750 consistently. Ever since I started playing by myself I lose at least 65% of the games I play, if not more. And by friends, I mean at least 3 people.

PSR means how often you play with good friends or teammates, not really a good 'skill' indicator.
If you want to win more, just play Legion whenever possible. Hellbourne loses far more often, because:
1) Host is usually on Legion side and statistically he/she is better that some random player
2) Legion side often has several friends.

You must be unlucky because every time I play with host and his friends they all end up being extremely noob.
