Ask a Question
Purpose
Hundreds of questions are asked in the Training Grounds every day, most of them one-answer questions. The purpose of this thread is to help clean up the forums while providing an easy means with which to obtain answers.
Rules
Question must be related to Heroes of Newerth
Question must be appropriate and follow all normal forum rules.
When answering, please quote the person you answered.
Try to keep conversations to a minimum. If it's something that has discussion value it's best to open up a thread. AAQ should be primarily for questions that have set answers or at least answers that won't change until a new patch is released.

Is Pestis ult purgeable by :NullfireBlade: ?
Undutchable

Why are commonly asked questions not taken into a big FAQ?
You're making a topic which will be spammed and only usefull if you spam in yourself.
Questions like Engineer ult vs magic immune, purge effects, nullstone effects, when the map editor comes up... and so on.
I'm not some kind of veteran on this forum, and i'm fed up with those questions already.
Yes i know, there are alot of topics saying those things, but since people fail to recognise the search function, might as well clean up the forum and create a big-ass topic full of in-depth knowledge.
Yes, this will be time consuming, yes it will be worth it...
PS: no i'm not going to do it ^^

Yes. Five awards prove it.
I dispute this. The golden shield isn't a real award so it doesn't count; and since you lied("denied the truth") you're an immoral person who cannot be considered a great leader for all of the noobs in the forum.
Is Pestis ult purgeable by :NullfireBlade:?
Yes. And by several heroes as well.

This is why. The last thread had 1500 posts in it.
We're going to try, with this one, to keep it more clean and push stuff into a FAQ.

Why is geometers bane:GeometersBane: most used on arachna:arac:, it seems like that is the only hero it is a "must" on, y not on :corr::pyro::chip:...
How do you get charges on nullfire:NullfireBlade: or do you only get 8 and thats it?
How is a nullstone:Nullstone: used, never bought one and i am confused by description, do you get to negate someone from using a certain spell?

1. I don't really know, it's just a perfect viable item for arachna. But also very decent on Corrupted, FA and so on. Just a good mid game DPS item. With survivability, atk speed and damage furthermore its a portable illusion Rune and it purges
2. You get new charges by purchasing the Recipe again.
3. It negates, "eats" a single, targeted spell. For example Andromedas Stun, but not AoE spells like FA's stun

U can get 8 more buying recipe one more time
, but only one time u get more agi and more small things too
Geometer bane is good in aracna cause she can slow and have + damage aura so its a lot of daamge and it great increase survivality, its very good on CD too and a lot used

Geometer's Bane is a very, very heavy DPS item. This makes it very good on any ranged semicarry such as Arachna, Valkyrie, Soulstealer, Engineer- Any agi semicarry/carry that needs damage.
The problem is, not all ranged agi semis/carries need damage. Corrupted Disciple leaches 20 damage / second from an enemy- that's more damage than geometer's will ever get you. Engineer has hit turret, which synergizes far more with thunderclaw than geometer's will synergize with him- so he doesn't get it. Wildsoul is melee half the time, so he doesn't get it- See what I mean?
Don't even bother getting it on characters that aren't agility. This means strength carries will never see this item (The damage boost isn't good enough for melee). Same with Intelligence.

wait...does this mean that :dead: just cannot use his ult on you if you have this, or he uses the skill on you and it just does nothing? Also is it targetable...like you select it then click an enemy heroe and these skills are negated for a certain amount of time.

Assuming nullstone is not on cooldown:
Deadwood goes up to you, and you start to shine blue. You have successfully absorbed his ultimate.
How to counter this:
Deadwood goes up to you, but he knows you have a nullstone. Luckily, his buddy :blac: also knows you have a nullstone, and wastes flaming hammer on you. You go blue absorbing the flaming hammer. Deadwood proceeds to punch you for all your HP.

Or if the Deadwood was really smart, he'd throw his stick at you to eat your Nullstone. That way he doesn't have to rage at his Blacksmith friend for 30m afterwards for not using either spell "because the Nullstone would eat it".

It's a good item but very situational. If you face an AoE lineup its nearly worthless because without targetable spells its pointless.
You should always look at the enemy lineup before buying it. pk_thunder told me it becomes viable if the enemy has 4 or mroe targetable spells a while ago.

hey, does nullstone now block AoE spells if u target a hero with it
(like witch and his stun, if u click for the stun to hit some, by the target, it is considered a single target spell and ik for sure that frostwolf activates on it, but will nullstone eat it?)

Some guides for Hammerstorm advice to buy Riftshard, but as far as I know Riftshard doesnt increase dmg when his ult is on, so why is it good item on him? Is it only cause U have better chance to hit crit dmg with your ult on? If so, is it worth the price?

^tbh I'd rather pk, insan, and behemoth heart on hammer
there's really no need for crits cus he's one of the beefier carries than the rest and wins fights just cus he has so much HP
riftshards can work with any hero with carry ability and it wouldn't be too bad (doesn't synergize with his ult but ur doing crits and have +75 dmg fairly cheap with a easy buildup)

Exact the same build Im using, fast PK, shrunken head and late game Behe heart.
Uhm I don't know why it shouldnt increase the dmage while his ult is on.
Same reason U do not buy items with +dmg for him, U rather pick items with + STR like Behe Heart or Shrunken Head which are affected by his ult. His ult buffes only his "basic dmg" without +dmg modifiers.

his ult only amplifies his base dmg
Riftshards stacks with this base damage amplification. It's the closest thing you have to the old Puppet Master/Scout crit-stacking days. This makes Riftshards great on :moon:,:arac:,:andr:,:dark:,:hamm:,:behe:,:pand:, :nigh: in terms of raw average damage on all boosted attacks. :pest: is sort of another candidate, but not really because he doesn't increase base damage.
Sure the raw damage on the Riftshards doesn't double-stack, but 75% stacking is good enough to beat out pretty much anything else except Doombringer + Riftshard.
If you're ever thinking to yourself, "My team can keep them slowed/stunned fine, I seem to have enough HP to get by in fights, can manage to not get stunned/slowed to a terrible degree, but we just can't seem to drop them before our initiation wears off", then Riftshards might be for you.

Im sure that +dmg from riftshard doesnt stack with Hammers ult, so paying 2650 for 10/13/16/20% chance for 1.8/2.0/2.2/2.4x crit dmg, is it really worth the cost? I would rather go for Behe Heart that scales good with his ult and buffs his HP to top..

Damage from riftshards DOES stack with his ult.
Lets assume Hammerstorm's Ultimate increases base damage by 200%. You are able to get two items: Item that gives +40 strength, or item that gives +60 damage.
As a strength hero, you naturally get +40 damage from the item with +40 strength. With his ultimate, your base damage is doubled, meaning your +40 strength item now increases damage by +80.
However, if you were to get the +60 damage item, it is not 'base' damage. This means with your ultimate, you still do +60 damage. Not +120.
Riftshards is pure, unadulterated, straight up damage. This means you'd be spending the money on damage which doesn't get doubled. That is why it's not a good choice on hammerstorm.

Base damage items are less efficient than raw damage items. Sure, on base-damage-doubling heroes they're pretty good, but you don't have alot of options.
Besides strength steamboots, insanitarius, behemoth heart, there aren't really any good sources of raw strength. As a result, most of your strength comes "naturally" through levels and points in stats, so you're not really losing much by going Riftshards over a strength item.
I think you'd have a tough time arguing that stacking base damage is superior to Riftshards for pure damage. If you disagree, you should probably start a thread in the Mechanics forum rather than continue it here.
I'd grab a doombringer in that situation xD
Probably not on Hammerstorm. It's semi-ok on Dark Lady, Nighthound, Magebane(to some extent), Scout because they're such mobile heroes they can stay in the shadows and jump in when they have an overwhelming definite advantage. It might actually be decent on Sand Wraith now that I think about it, but I'm too scared to try that. :p
[edit]: I fully realize that the raw damage does not stack with Hammerstorm's ulti, and that a strength item would make the number that appears next to your hero portrait bigger. I still claim Riftshards give more damage.

Exactly what I was trying to say, but English isnt my 1st language so I expressed myself wrong. Rift does add dmg to Hammer but its not, lets say doubled, by his ult. So, as U said, prolly not the best item on him..

Riftshards is a good item for Hammerstorm, but quite simply other items are better. Portal Key, Shrunken Head, Behemoth's Heart, Insanitarious, etc. are all better items than Riftshards. They provide him with health and damage, rather than raw damage, which is important for a hero like Hammerstorm.

This can be tested in practice mode.
1.If your image is killed, nothing happens. you are still invisible.
2.If you pesti swarms you and you invisi, the swarm sticks to you

Tank is poor wording, but he is a counter to tanky (notice the y) heroes. As long as they don't have a lot of armor, that is. He is great against most str heroes, who have a lot of hp and little armor (but also great against most int heroes, who don't have a lot of hp and still have the little armor)
Armor is important because his carnivorous passive is physical damage. Pred has a lot of trouble against high-armored heroes.
Also SS with behe heart is pretty good because it allows him to kill creep waves with 2 nukes in lategame. But most people get FWS on him lategame anyway, which makes him extremely buff.

Like you said, theres no way to avoid the stun. You can't really protect yourself.
The best thing to do is buying some magic armor stuff. His combo deals about 1,1k damage. Thats much, especially early game but just buying a Vestment for 400g (+5 magic armor) will help you to survive his combo.
Of course that won't be enough if he just initiates a fight and his teammates follow him.
Another good advice even though it might not sound like one: Don't let him get the initiation

I can't remember with 100% certainty since I haven't played DotA nor HoN in a while, but I think its +60 damage on that one attack, and is also splashed with the total of your damage. The enemy being hit gets the +60 damage but it isn't splashed onto them as well (for 120 damage).
So whatever your attacking will take your normal damage +60, and so will splashed units.

So whatever your attacking will take your normal damage +60, and so will splashed units.
That's what I thought as well but another site said only the +60 true damage was splashed but maybe it was wrong. So in your example if the person had 100 damage to start with the enemy being hit would get 160 damage and the splash would be 160....does that mean all 160 is true damage? Thanks.

If you hit your target for 100 without whip, then when you hit WITH whip, you'll hit for 160.
All targets hit with the cleave will take the exact same amount that your initial target took, and as pure damage.
The secondary targets will take MORE than the initial if you get a runed axe, and even the extra will be pure damage.

The true damage dealt to the secondary targets is equal to the exact damage dealt to the primary target.
If you right click Madman and hit him for 5, your cleave will hit his ally Plague Rider for 5.

- How do you counter characters with an ability that can interrupt a channeling spell?
- damage reduced by magic armor is magic damage
- no this works just for auto attacks just like basically every item that adds+damage or adds an effect like slow or crit.
- most skills and nearly all stuns/disables are magic. With a shrunken head, wich gives you magic immunity you can counter any magic skill.

A few questions:

1) there are 2 types of dmg in game, magic and physical. auto attack and some spells are physical. rest of the spells are magical. harkons also makes ur auto attacks magical dmg. armor defends physical dmg while magic armor defends against magical dmg. magic dmg is more of early game unless if you pick up a harkons.
2) no, no dmg from weapons affects spells unless it says so in the tooltip (e.g. SotM or heroes with crits as a skill)
3) generally these abilities are magical (to be more specific, the dmg and other effects, like stuns, can be different. e.g. :pest:'s stun is physical dmg but the stun is magical). to best counter magical effects like these a :ShrunkenHead: gives you full magic immunity. I'm pretty sure some stuns are Superior Magic (that is stuns, if they are superior magic, go thru magic immunity, not sure if there is a spell like that tho ._.). there's no way to counter that.

Moon Queen is a carry hero. At no point do you want to just be leaching experience. You always want to be farming. Very few heroes can solo the short lane effectively (top for leg, bot for hellbourne), and moonqueen is too fragile to be one of them. In this case, you should swap for sure.
The long lanes for each side are typically more defensive lanes: heroes that need to farm, heroes that need tower protection, heroes that need jungle. The short lanes are for more aggressive teams: tandams than can dual-stun (magmus pyro), or lanes that can farm aggressively without risk (accursed soulreaper).
Moonqueen needs to play defensively against two heroes, so you should be bottom. Cask +cursed ground + barrel role + stalk can easily kill a hero. In the given situation, switch with bottom. In the future, take bottom or middle solo, or lane top with a hero like glacius - your nukes can do a lot of damage with some disable, and a long freeze + mana regeneration works wonders.

I've been playing Defiler a lot recently
Stormspirit:
1. +20 movespeed is very, very good on Defiler. Especially combined with her +10% move speed.
2. Mana regen which is sorely needed for wave spam
3. A CC/Interupt able to stop channelers and hold people in place
4. An ally / own life saver which can be used to juke.
Yes, her ult does damage if you are cycloned. No it does not do damage if the enemy is cycloned. It should heal her during cyclone, but I'm not 100% on this.
I usually build my defilers: Phase Boots --> Stormspirit --> Frostfield Plate. I have tons of trouble vs. lots of CC on the enemy team however.

I hadnt realized it had changed since dota.
In dota it was:
P(chance to crit) = 1 - (1 - P[A crit]) * (1 - P[B crit]) * (1 - P[C crit])
So a 35% crit and a 25% crit would result in a 51.25% overall chance to crit, with one overriding the other in precedence. This balanced multiple bashers / burizas before they removed the bash stacking.
Can you confirm it is actually different? Might not seem significant to you (eg simplifying it for simplicity's sake) but it makes a difference.

This is actually correct, what I said was only partially correct. If you have a strong 25% crit and a weak 25% crit, the strong 25% will apply to 100% of your attacks, and the weak 25% will apply to the remaining 75%. This gives you a 43.75% total crit chance.
That is my understanding of the mechanic, anyway. Elementuser can probably clarify this better than I can.

Both have a chance to proc.
Overall critical chance is what the person above me said. If both criticals proc at the same time, the highest critical multiplier will be used.
Overall DPS increase is calculated differently and is based on probability.
If you do a search in the Mechanics forum for a hearted thread with keyword "Critical", you'll find some more details on overall DPS increase.

being stunned is more of a pseudo silence, but it will stop all channeling spells. (like I'm pretty sure if you get sotm on :accu: you still won't be able to activate it while stunned and it doesn't stop :nigh:'s passive, the only passive that can be stopped with silence in the game)

there are competitive HoN teams across the world.
say a team from france comes to play vs a team from the US, US gets the server roll (or w/e they do to decide which server to play on) and I'm pretty sure they do:
game 1: US server
game 2: FR server
game 3: US server
if the US wins the server roll.
playing on a server that's far away from you generally makes you lag (because even if it's only .4 seconds of delay from the server to you, you'll still see the lag) and some times ppl just need a pause to get things set up and maybe relog/reboot in hopes for a better latency/less lag. sometimes it family business ("Get off the computer, you've used it all day") or their mouse broke.
lol I could've make this tons shorter xD
also pretty sure they sometimes pause for HoNCast, like when the stream screws up or something (I've seen it once but that was some time ago)

My question is about playing Legionaire. I have read guides on him and also read up about creep stacking and pulling creeps into lane. However, whenever I play Legionaire I am usually a level or so behind everyone else while jungling.
I start with a shield+tango's and often buy the courier due to no one else buying it. I'll very often start by pulling creeps into lane and getting the last hit. Then i'll go to the easy camp and kill that. Next i'll look for a Skeleton camp or Vegabond and stack it. Very often though I get on very low health and have to stop farming for a good while, sometimes even having to run back to the fountain or send for new tangoes on courier.
My problem is that I often get low health on the easy creeps but also I can die quite fast from stacking mobs due to not enough swing procs. Is there any better way to do this?

However, you've said that you read guides, and know about creep stacking etc. Can you show us a replay of you with legion, so we can give pointers?
Hmm I'll give some quick advice regardless of replay.
Instead of pulling the creep camp into lane at 0:47, pull it at 0:52 to stack it. Pull THAT into the lane. It should deny the entire creep wave, and weaken the creeps. Proceed to destroy them. By the time they are dead, it should be around 1:30-ish. If you can find a golem camp, kill it. at 1:52 pull the large camp and stack it. Pull the pullable camp into lane again. You should be level 3, and the enemies should be near your tower because of your pulling. Use your health potion and go gank the lane if you can. A successful gank will get you level 4, hopefully some hero kill gold, and extra lane creeps to boot. Buy a health tube and stack as many camps as you reasonably can while killing small camps and regaining your health. If possible you want to have several triple-stacked camps by the time you hit level 5. Kill these camps and you'll have level 6, boots, and possibly your Helm of the Black Legion.
The trick with jungling heroes is balancing farming and ganking. A good balance will maximize your farm.
EDIT: I looked at the stats of your last legionnaire game. It looks like you did ok, and your entire team failed. Cant actually watch the replay from work, but if I remember when I get home ill glance at it.

Here's a slightly better strategy. At 0:52, pull the yellow easy camp. (depending whether or not you're hellbourne or legion will determine whether you can stack multiple camps). That'll take you to level two. Look for skeleton camps, then double pull the two camps the farthest away from your base, (possibly with both legion and hellbourne). You'll have two stacked camps. I like to go kill skeles if you have any, then stack the third camp, (save it for say, level 5-6 or so, taunt and the other skill's going to be a must to kill this). From then, there's no particular order. Try to doublestack that camp when you can, pull when your lanemate needs it, gank at level 6, for sure. After that, stack as much as you can and farm wisely.

I can't come up with one of these code windows but it's pretty easy.
It dispells every magic debuff except for some non dispellable debuffs like cursed ground.
Also it doesnt remove madmans barrel roll but thats just some kind of a bug.
"Some non-dispellable buffs" is not really the technical quality of answer I was looking for :p Does that mean it does dispell other non-dispellable buffs? :D
I know from experience what it does and does not dispell, but theres some things that I have not tried and would be good to know. For example, gauntlet's cripple?

This is a known bug with replays. You need to go through the loading screen at the game lobby, just speed it up or something really fast. Then the animations will show correctly.

1. No. They nerfed it so it can't.
2. Yes. The attack will count as a normal physical attack.
3. No.
4. All of these can be tested by yourself in the practice room.

It adds 10% damage to everything. I can confirm this from a game earlier where I farmed it on Soulstealer. At approx 40+ minutes, creeps have too much health for Soulstealer to kill them with a double nuke. After farming the heart, I was able to double nuke them again.

Yes it does. Panda'a ult is a series of four attacks over 4.5 seconds. Since they are classified as standard swings, Runed Axe and all other effects will trigger from them. The same applies to each hit of The Dark Lady's Charging Strikes.
This effect can be seen in the screenshot below:

The attack modifiers do not proc on any of the 3/5/8 swift slashes, but if your attack speed is high enough you can attack between the slashes. These attacks are standard physical attacks and will proc modifiers like runed axe cleave, frostwolf slow, shieldbreaker -armour, riftshards crit... etc.

How do you counter Flint? Atm whenever he's on one team I see him face roll through the laning phase with his range and just dominate the rest of the game, is he IMBA atm or is it just like any new hero to HoN and no one knows how to counter them for a little bit?
Yukari
08-15-2010, 06:10 AM
Flint is currently imbalanced IMO, and will probably be toned down later. However, there are a few ways to deal with him to this day. Should Flint be in the midlane, the direct counter would be heroes with strong nukes and lane control such as thunderbringer, corrupted dis, pyromancer etc. Should Flint be in a sidelane, simply have an aggressive hero combos, pyro mag, witchslayer glad, etc. etc.
Just keep in mind that Flint has a pathetic hp pool and no escape mechanism early on.
A blinker can avoid his ultimate if you're good. If you can't time the blink you can probably get out of range anyway. Out-rune him in the middle lane and continually harrass for best results. Hag works well for the blink/rune control/massive nukes.
Tripwyr
08-17-2010, 02:14 AM
Doctor Repulsor is an exceptional counter to Flint. Lot of burst damage, a solid disable, and an invulnerability charge to avoid the ultimate. Keep in mind that Doctor Repulsor's ultimate isn't even a disjoint, it just flat out makes him invulnerable to the spell. This means even spells which would track Magebane won't hit DRep.
I personally feel Doctor Repulsor is the strongest counter, but Flint honestly is really easy to counter.

Flint is easy to counter, people just havnt yet realized that they cant let him farm, and then stand in front of him right-clicking him. I had excellent results last night with a portal-key hammerstorm. Flint cant really do anything against a combo that can kill him in four seconds.
Just pretend the sniper is a soulstealer. How would you kill a soustealer? You wont just run up and attack him because he'll nuke the crap out of you. You kill him with harass and burst damage. You dont just let him CS, you beat on him while his damage is low and you have an advantage. If he gets farmed up, you're going to be in trouble unless you have a bigger/better carry.
scoutcarry
08-17-2010, 01:04 PM
Call for a single gank in the first 4 levels if hes solo mid. Disrupting his farm with a single death is pretty devastating.
Also, I know a fair few people disagree with me, but I think flint is one of the worst carrys in the game. Even if he goes assassins, thats like 4k for an item which really doesn't give you much DPS and gives you a pretty easily counterable escape. If he doesnt go assassins, hes a hero with a bad HP pool, an RNG based ministun(and hence, unreliable), and no escape mechanism. Probably the easiest carry in the game to single out. Even arachna has an ability which gets out of SOME disables.

Attack Speed and Damage
When is one better than the other? I always see it like this: either I could hit once per second with 100 damage or twice per second with 50 damage. Either way I'm doing 100 damage.
scoutcarry
08-17-2010, 01:21 PM
Depends on the hero.
Look at the reason why your hero is a carry. Is he a carry with an RNG based skill, or a skill that is based on the amount of attacks he does but NOT reliant on the amount of damage he does, i.e. chronos bash, flint beastwood ministun, etc. Get attack speed.
Or is he a carry with a skill or ability based on his attack damage in some way, i.e. dark lady's tainted blades(debatable, but with the charging strikes + diminishing returns on attack speed I'd say DPS works better) nighthound's backstab, madman's critical strike, etc. Get damage.
Also probably a good thing to note: there are items which can change the dynamics of the hero. Getting Savage mace on arachna/forsaken etc. means you probably want to be focusing on attack speed afterwards as it can substitute for a skill with RNG based scalability.
Ditto for riftshards on the other end of the spectrum.
itwasntmeo_O
08-17-2010, 01:24 PM
The thing is that damage increases linearly, while increasing attack speed loses effectiveness the higher it is.
Here is a table from the mechanics section:
Frames per attack| Seconds per attack| attacks per second| attack speed required
20| 1.00| 1.00| +70
19| 0.95| 1.05| +79
18| 0.90| 1.11| +89
17| 0.85| 1.18| +100
16| 0.80| 1.25| +113
15| 0.75| 1.33| +127
14| 0.70| 1.43| +143
13| 0.65| 1.54| +163
12| 0.60| 1.67| +183
11| 0.55| 1.82| +209
10| 0.50| 2.00| +240
09| 0.45| 2.22| +278
08| 0.40| 2.50| +325
07| 0.35| 2.85| +386
06| 0.30| 3.33| +467
05| 0.25| 4.00| +580
04| 0.20| 5.00| +750
03| 0.15| 6.66| +1033
02| 0.10| 10.0| +1600
01| 0.05| 20.0| +3300
You can see that the number of attacks increases at a slow exponential curve with respect to attack speed. To double your attacks per second, you need to quadruple your attack speed anywhere before the +500 attack speed mark.
If you pick up a doombringer, you'll always get +200 damage. If you pick up a second warpcleft, you wont get the same bonus as you saw from the first warpcleft.
From a playing point of view, the best way to go is to increase both at about the same rate. That will give you maximum damage per second for your money.
scoutcarry

The problem with your reasoning itsnotme is that your logic is flawed.
If you do 200 damage already, pick up a doombringer, you do double the damage you did originially.
Pick up another one, you do only 1.5x the damage you did with the first one.
That being said, Increasing both is usually the best idea.
The only Item which will always increase your damage by the same percentage(not including the stats gained i suppose) is geometers bane. Thats why its usually a core item on any ranged carry.

I suppose, but I was thinking about it a little bit differently. Attack speed has specific break points to hit. If you spent 2100 on 55 attack speed, but didnt pass the next break point, then thats 2100 wasted for the moment. However, if you spend that on 40 damage instead, then you would have the 40 damage regardless.

Abyssal skull does not increase base agility, nor does it increase total damage. It only increases base damage, and because backstab has nothing to do with base damage, no. Backstab does not benefit from the +15% base damage from abyssal skull.

And what is the metagame? I thought the metagame was about your mid game carry and ganking.
itwasntmeo_O
08-25-2010, 10:28 AM
"Metagame" refers to the current playstyle in high-level games. The playstyle often determines which heroes are regarded as strong, and which heroes never get used.
Today's metagame is the trilane strategy. Voodoo jester and Andromeda, who rarely saw play in 2/1/2 lanes, now see a lot of time as trilane babysitters. Andromeda's stun and -armour skill allows a trilane to get good positioning and do a lot of damage to enemy heroes, where as witch doctor has a nice stun, a really nice heal, and a cursed ground skill (not used so much in trilanes) for lane control and babysitting.
Chipper is a mid solo that needs to gank a lot. In a trilane strategy, your mid will have nothing to gank because your trilane will be annihilating a solo hero or dual lane, and your other lane will be barely surviving a solo against another trilane or an aggressive dual lane.
In today's metagame high mobility heroes and excellent farming heroes are key in middle, and survivable heroes are key in the solo sidelane. Heroes like pharoh (freshpro only), hag, and valk are common in the sides, while soulstealer is the preferred mid.

Also, metagame ORIGINALLY meant outside influences and tendancies on the game, i.e. "I know this team likes to play very aggressively, we should get more wards than we usually do this game" or "Trixi plays an insane valk, we should ban valk"
It originally came from SC:BW If i recall correctly, but there was a bit of a mistranslation when DoTA and HoN players picked up on the jargon, hence the current definition.
Note: The definition is as i said earlier in regards to SC:BW/other RTS. If you are talking about a game other than HoN or DoTA and refer to the metagame, make sure you dont confuse the 2.

Look at the items in "morph attack" at the shop. Anything with Attack Modifier, in its description does not stack with each other. Mainly modifiers that slow (Icebrand, frostwolf), debuff armour (Shield Breaker, Harkons), Lifesteal, as well as some passive/active abilities that use physical attacks (slither's Toxicity, etc.)
"Mana Combustion" (nullfire blade) is a type of exclusive modifier which can stack with an Attack Modifier however does not stack with itself (Magebane's passive) in which case the strongest of the two will be used.

This might seem stupid but I'm just checking--if you got a shield breaker and turned elder on, would the damage from shield still apply or is it just base damage? And would the +60 from shield be considered additional base damage or a modifier or would only the -6 be the modifier? Or do these items not stack at allzand if you got them what would happen?

Only the effects of debuffs placed (or lifesteal gained) from items will not stack. So shieldbreaker gives +60 damage regardless of what items you have (additional base damage), similarly the attack-speed increase from activating elder is added as well, but the modifiers do not stack (-6 armor vs lifesteal, preference is depended upon which slot both items are contained in).

Select the courier and press Control plus a number from 1-0. That will "assign" the unit to that number. Pressing the number at any point later will select the courier, and pressing the number twice will center your camera on the courier.
You can do this with a hero or any minions, as well. I personally use 1 for my hero and 5 for my courier.

Once Hag gets a bottle she can out rune-control every standard mid. This is pretty much the only thing Hag has going for her against ranged carries. Valk has not so great damage and relies on hitting arrows to get any kind of kills in a solo lane, so abuse your third skill to force her out of lane. Use it to get creep kills and hurt her simultaneously, as well as pushing the lane just before rune spawns so you have even more of an advantage getting to them first.
There's no way to teach someone how to not get hit by 5s arrows, either you're paying attention or you're not.

After all, it's only as good as your ability to keep attacking and do damage through autoattacks while activated. It's pretty expensive for what it does. Maybe if you get Insanitarious first...

Heres my response:
First things first. At the early levels 1-3, Maliken may not seem like much, however thats not too much of a problem for me most of the time, since most heroes are quite weak at that stage. When i hit 4-6'ish I'm able to combo swordthrow and animation cancel to do massive damage to my opponents. In between these, I use bottle to regen, grab the rune if its decent, even courier bottles if necessary.
Steamboots comes next, this ones obvious.
Whispering helm; the item that you question. This item can be obtained relatively early, at the 8 minute mark is my average. Not only does this allow you to stay in lane, but it nullifies the damage that you take from Enchanted Flames. But the bigger bit is that it allows you to dominate creeps and to stack ancients. It also gives a nifty damage and armor bonus. Icing on the cake.
SoR, the first big item. After hitting 11 and clearing the ancients once or twice, I can usually obtain a SoR at the 18-20 minute mark. At this stage of the game, most lineups only have burst damage. Semi's are powerful with they burst, same with nukers, however hard carries are still struggling. This is where SoR shines. Force a teamfight, or a small scale battle, initiate, ult, get bursted down, SoR right back up. Your dps is already huge in contrast to others.
Here is where things differ game to game. The item i did not list (or rather forgot, thanks for reminding me) would be Shrunken Head. Pretty obvious of an item, provides damage, str and magic immunity. Everything that Maliken needs to rape in Teamfights. Because FU disables when I'm having fun raping your team.
Daemonic and Riftshards are next, depending on the game. Daemonic if they hav massive physical damage, rifts if I feel like ripping everyone apart should my own life not be on the line (hell why should it? Imba lifesteal thanks to SoR)
Then whatever luxury it is you wish to have. Games usually end at this point for me.

How does the deniesystem work?
1/3 exp for ranged, and 2/3 for melee
but im not sure if its meant that denys made by melee only deny 2/3 xp and denies from ranged 1/3 or if it means that ranged heroes get 1/3 of the denied creeps exp (and 2/3 for melee) --- regardless who denied it
im confused :balp:

If bloodhunter has an abyssal skull and does his first skill on himself would it be +95% base damage total or is the equation different like the 15% from abyssal first then add 80% from the first skill ontop of that? (I'm horrible at math sorry)
Also is Abyssal considered a good pickup on him? If I were to pick up a ice brand as well would the chilled effect be the modifier being used or would it be the life steal?
Thanks!

abyssal skull is not a modifier, its an aura life steal and therefore you can get a modifier like frostwolf or icebrand and still slow them while also getting the life steal. Other life steal items like satanic/symbol of rage and MoM/elder parasite will not stack with the ice/slow since those 2 life steal items are modifiers.

its 80% plus 15%. Easily tested in practice mode, equipping the abyssal will give the same damage boost regardless of whether or not you have Blood Crazy on yourself.
Attack modifiers do not stack. If you wish to have more then one, you must switch between them. The default key for this is period. You can also download a mod that will auto toggle between attack mods. Whichever attack mod you equip first stays as the default, even if you purchase another one later.

Abyssal Skull is not an Attack Modifier. Icebrand stacks with Abyssal Skull.
Yukari

The only part that confuses people about whether abyssal skull is an attack modifier would be the lifesteal portion. It is actually an aura that is propagated to the entire team, and Aura != Modifier. Note that ranged heroes do not gain lifesteal from Abyssal Skull's aura.

1. It's completely randomized. The percentage differs depending on the type of critical, some are more frequent than others.
2. If you're not it's a massive bug and would have been reported by now, so I'm going to say yes without testing it.

For 1, it's based on the output of a Mersenne Twister. It's not random, it's pseudo-random.

Tripwyr
09-10-2010, 03:55 PM
That is correct, they don't.
The term pseudo-random distribution in DotA actually refers to the algorithm used by Blizzard. In essence it evens out random number generation by giving all (pseudo-)randomly occurring effects a very low chance of occuring, and increasing the chance each time they do not occur. By doing this, the average occurrence rate remains constant, but "RNG chains" do not occur as frequently.
Mathematically; however, pseudo-random distribution is a much more general term. Pseudo-random distribution actually refers to the distribution created by any pseudo-random generator. The Mersenne Twister (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mersenne_twister) is the pseudo-random number generator employed by S2; IIRC, they actually use the SFMT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mersenne_twister#SFMT) (SIMD-oriented Fast Mersenne Twister) which is faster and more accurate.
Correct me if I was wrong on any of this.

PRD means two things: Blizzard's randomization, and the output of a randomizer. Blizzard's randomization is a special algorithm which is a little bit deterministic, not truly pseudo-random. Mathematic PRD is the output generated by a true randomization algorithm. Basically, using PRD to refer to Blizzard's randomization is mathematically incorrect.
I hope this is dumbed far enough down for you =]

Blizzard uses a special algorithm for some "random" events. It's not intended to be random, it starts out at a low percentage and gets more likely every time until it procs, then it resets to the low percent. People mistakenly call this pseudo-random generation.
PRG actually just means pretty much any computer generated randomization, because computers have no way to actually make something random and just base it off of the milliseconds on the clock or something like that.

What's the proper way to use Malphas in the middle of a team fight? I tried clicking ` to take control of him but get the courier instead which I usually purchase since I'm playing support. Should I even both taking control of him when the battle is heated or do I cast him in and let him work his magic?

First of all, before dropping him cast Life Void on as many enemy units as possible. It makes him deal more damage when he falls/breaths and also heals you a lot more.
After you drop him, immediately fire breath and then have him target someone. You can't use any hotkey that I know of, so just make a selection-box right after you drop him to select him, then q->click. Then go back to your hero (F1 or whatever you hotkey him to) and try to keep him alive. The Malphas isn't as important and as long as he's attacking a hero there's not too too much you can do with him.

Malphas can be used to initiate (starting the fight), as extra damage during the fight or to stun out channelling spells and end a fight. It's down to your team lineup what role he plays.
Generally, its best to use a life void and boil before you throw down Malphas, just so your spells are out of the way, the life void will heal you so theres less micro involved and Malphas will stun for a few seconds. When he drops, select him and if you're planning on hardcore micro'ing you can hold ctrl + 1 (or any number) and he will then be grouped to that key for his duration.
Setting him to attack an important or squishy hero is best, like the carry (:scou:) or a caster (:pyro:) and he generally just soaks up damage. Use his fire breath asap on as many people as you can, and if you're really good you can remember how long the cooldown is and swap back to Malphas when its ready again.
Bottomline is, keep Hellbringer alive while Malphas does the damage and takes it. If you land a good (3+ heroes)* stun then its already a well used ultimate, the summon is just a bonus.
*when I say 3+ that doesn't mean don't use it on a single hero to stop them getting away, use your own judgement.

How do you drink from a bottle after grabbing an invis rune without breaking the invis for the first sip? I noticed that in some competitive games and on streams, players are able to take the first charge from a bottle after grabbing an invis rune and still be invisible. Is this a glitch?
Another neat trick I noticed is that if your tping from the fountain to somewhere and your inventory is full, you can swap the tp mid teleport for an item in your storage without breaking the tp.

The invisibility rune has a short fade time, during which, you can take action without breaking the invisibility. Simply bottle the rune, use it when needed, and immediately take one drink from your bottle.

Not with the default hotkeys, but you can easily change your hotkeys to make Control+F2 set a "group" and then anytime after that when you want to select your minions you can just hit F2.

Given the certain amount of spare money to afford the item, is it/will it ever be efficient to fill your inventory with lifetubes/trinkets of resto to regen the hp at a side shop, and then sell them before 15 seconds for a full refund?
This is instead of ferrying yourself regen consumables. Obviously circumstances like pushing the lane up need to be taken into account.

I've just tried this in practice mode, and it doesn't seem to happen anything. I have the minions targeted and i press ctrl+F2 (tried spamming F2 too, doesn't help), nothing happens. Am I doing it wrong?
Edit:
I did some more testing and found out that you indeed have to change a few things in the options. Go options->controls->look in the additional controls section->change "recall selection "to F2->change "add to selection 1" to ctrl+F2
Now I'm able to do what I wanted.

Its a nice abusable thing, but to be honest if you're sitting by the side shop for 30 seconds just to buy and sell two hits of lifetubes, you're probably better off hurling all your spells at something to get gold, teleporting back to base, and then returning with full mana/life/cooldowns. The chances that you can buy a lifetube, creep enough, and return to sell/rebuy it enough for it to be effective is very small.

Agreed. The better alternative is to courier over consumeables when the circumstance calls for it, and to ck. 30s at the sideshop = give enemy 1 wave of freefarm, while losing 1 wave yourself. Thats two waves in their favor.

Ctrl+Shift+right-click ensures that you can sell from anywhere on the map without having to be next to the shop. So it's possible to still contest the lane and CK, while doing this. As both of your objections are based on time away from the creeps, would this change anything?
Yukari
09-15-2010, 09:00 PM
No, because this then introduces the variable of creep position. If your lane is pushed up, it MAY work, as it will still take time to walk back to the shop after the 15 seconds just to abuse this. The other factor is that because you are repeatedly doing this, enemies may chase you in the side shop resulting in unfavorable positioning on your part.
I still rather courier an HP potion or something.
Though I guess you can pick up a lifetube real fast while getting to the creep line and sell it for a bonus ~50hp; no harm no foul in that.

well, if you get initiated or something while carrying that lifetube, you could get into problems... it sounds not bad, a bit like the practice of switching str out of your inventory to reg better. I have to admit thats too much of a hassle for me ^^
I've always changed my Steamboots to Int/Agi/Str for more bonuses. i.e. I'm about to use my bottle charges, I'll change to Agi which lowers mana/hp pool and therefore more healing. Or before casting a spell I'll change to INT then change back.
I know competitive players do/did this but my friend said they've now changed it so it doesn't help at all, and it was an exploit. Truth? Or bull? I also remember the treads trick happening in DotA so I never saw it as a bug..
