as I was a total noob when I started this game I found the following extremely useful:
start your own game and make it private, start the game without opponents and try out as many items/heroes as possible to get a feel for the game and to understand the mechanics behind it.
Always stock up on the best things you can get in the shop which is right next to where you spawn.
for noobs like me, some armor and some weapons and a few mana/health potions were enough to get started.
remember that the creeps should do most of the fighting and you can take advantage of this by choosing heroes that allow for spellcasting at a distance, therefore preventing you from dying an early death.
have a few private games before you attempt to join a server as in some games you may be met by DOTA fanatics or experienced players who will not benefit from your early death as it gives an advantage to the opponent. And remember to try to let the creeps do their work.....
