How to Purchase HoN: Debit Cards (Check Cards)

Q: What is a debit card? (also known as a check card)
A: Think of it like an ATM card- you have an account at a bank, and you can take money out of it. But instead of getting cash, you use it at a shop like a credit card. It pays the shop directly with the money in your bank account.

Q: I don't have one.
A: Get one.

Q: How?
A: Go to your bank or credit union. Tell them you want a debit card (or check card). 5 minutes later, you'll have one.

Q: But I'm only 12/poor/lazy/irresponsible.
A: 12yrs old: Doesn't matter - most don't have an age limit. Tell your parents you're getting one, they'll think it's good that you're being a big boy. You can't mess up your life with a debit card like you can with a credit card. If you don't have any money in your account and you try to use it, it will either fail or let you buy 1 thing, and charge you a penalty. Big deal. Call your bank and tell them your situation, they'll hook you up.

Poor: Most of the time they're free. Also the account they are linked to is usually free. Call your bank. If they want lots of money for it, call a different bank. I bet there's at least 1 bank or credit union in town that has an account and card for free (or maybe $2/year)

Lazy/Irresponsible: Get up off your ass and get one. Once you get one, you're set for life. I've been using one for almost 10 years now. You can usually check to see how much is in your account online (or at ATMs), and even put money into/out of them online.

Q: What banks can I do this at?
A: Bank of America (google it), Wells Fargo (google it) both do it for free. User Sprega says: "Lloyds TSB Bank in the UK gives free bank accounts and VISA debit cards." User `Entice says: "Chase has free checking accounts and debit cards. [Washington Mutual was purchased by Chase]".

Also call your bank/credit union. Some countries/banks are stupid and give you debit cards that don't work online, or don't have a CVV number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Card_Security_Code) that you need to make online purchases . Also while things generally work well in the US and major EU countries, several people here are reporting problems getting/using cards in smaller countries. There are thousands of reasons why they wouldn't work. YOU HAVE TO TALK TO YOUR BANK ABOUT IT. Tell them you want to buy something on the internet, give them as much information as you can about it. ASK THEM ABOUT FEES BEFORE DOING ANYTHING.

Q: OK I have my debit card. What now?
A: Buy HoN. If your debit card says "Visa" on it, it will definitely work [if you put in your info correctly/have enough money in your account]. It doesn't HAVE to say Visa though, there are many other companies that provide the same kind of thing. Check the HoN billing page for more info. Also ZIP is just another name for Postal Code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_code).

Q: I need more information.
A: Usually the type of account you want is a "checking" account. Those have lower interest rates (basically you don't get much money over time for leaving money in them), but allow money to flow in and out of them - like for your debit/check card.
Why are they free?
Usually if you don't have enough money in your account and you try to buy something, you'll get a charged a fee. This can be $20-40. This is how they make money. If you know how much is in your account, this shouldn't happen to you.
Some of them also may charge you a yearly/monthly fee for the account, unless you deposit money frequently into it (like a paycheck), at which point it becomes free.
How do I put money in it?
You can go to your bank and put money in. Most of them have a "drop box" that you fill out a little form, put your cash in, put it in an envelope (all of these supplies are there, outside the bank), and put it in the little chute. Next day it should be in your account ready. Like returning a DVD!
You can also put money into them online or through your employer. Ask your bank/employer. (this is usually called Direct Deposit)

Q: But I still don't get it.
A: Try asking in this thread or call your bank. [U]I can't stress calling your bank enough. They PAY PEOPLE to sit there and take your phone call while you ask them questions like "is it free?" "when are you open?" "will you wipe my bottom?" They'll gladly help you with whatever they can. If you don't understand something, ASK THEM! They have to tell you the truth. If you don't like the person you're talking to, ask to speak to someone else.

Q: I don't want to get a debit card.
A: Ask your bank about a "prepaid credit card." It will work like a gift card, where you put money on it and then can spend it (most likely anywhere that Visa or the card brand is accepted).
You can also use PayPal if you have a bank account already. Google it.

Does anyone know of a decent sized bank/CU in the US and/or EU that has free accounts with free debit/check cards? Would be nice to have a few links for people. Please only say places that do actually have them for free or super cheap. I don't want speculation.

IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS USING YOUR CARD:

1) Check to make sure you have enough money in your account.
2) Check to make sure your card is the correct type. I can't speak for sure about some cards, but if your card says VISA on it, it should work. Also it should probably have a CVV number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Card_Verification_Value) on the back. Some cards are stupid and have "no-online" restrictions and stuff like that. Ask the place that gave you the card if this is true.
3) Check your account information. Usually the bank account that your card is linked to is the one that you should use. So if you currently live at 555 Rage Street, but you made the account/got the card when you lived at 1212 Balphagore Road, you should probably use 1212 Balphagore Road. (Unless you actually updated that information with the bank when you moved to your current address, of course.)

4) Contact S2 support at support@heroesofnewerth.com and include AS MUCH INFORMATION AS YOU CAN: like type of card, country you are in, country you obtained the card, ensuring you have enough funds ($30 USD is not 30 units of your local currency! some banks charge a fee for doing currency conversions!), ensuring you used the correct address, the different methods you tried, and all of the error message you got when it failed, etc. THIS FORUM IS NOT THE PLACE TO POST ANY OF YOUR PRIVATE INFORMATION, NOR DOES S2 SUPPORT STAFF LOOK HERE FOR BILLING ISSUES. Mostly good, but not all debit cards are like credit cards. You'll have to get a debit card with Visa/Mastercard/whatever added on. A lot of banks call these 'debit credit cards' for some reason, even though there's no credit involved.

I've had a debit card through various banks since I was about 6 (My Mom got us each our own account and our own debit cards at very young ages, I guess she did some things right), but it's only recently (a year and a half ago) that I decided to get one with credit card functionality.

Debit cards are great and all, but if you're looking for one to buy HoN with, make sure you ask your bank about debit/credit, or whatever they call them. Tell them you want to make online purchases, but that you don't want to open up a line of credit. Otherwise you might just end up with a debit card that's useless for online purchases.

If you are old enough to use a computer, you should have a bank account. There is really no reason not to. As I said above, my Mother got me one when I was about 6. I learned how to use it and manage my money from about that point on, and plan on doing the same for my kids.

For a basic rule of thumb: If you're reading this, and don't have a bank account. Go out and get one. Seriously. As the original poster said, most accounts are completely free or $2 a year or something.

Linking Paypal to a bank account has some 3-5 day delay before it's verified. If you're in a hurry, credit card is still the fastest way to get it done.

With debit cards sponsored by major banks, I believe they let you set it inhouse. For giftcards, you must set it online somewhere. It's been a while since I've used one so I forgot where.

I don't get why this is stickied. It seem to speak from the Euro Union and United States point of view and people already know how to deal with credit/debit cards there. For those who live in 3rd world countries won't get anything out of. Some cards are rejected, some are not meant to work out of your country and this "how to" didn't even speak of the issue.

For users with trouble paying, we'll need to know what country you're attempting to pay from in addition to all of the regular CC/transaction info that helps us troubleshoot the issue - just make sure you include it your mails to support.

Chase has free checking accounts and debit cards. I used to bank at WaMu before they went under and Chase bought them out.

Has been pretty good ever since the switch. Also, you can check your balance online like many other big banks.

It is a Master Card, not Visa...but it still works just fine.

They don't call you to tell you you've passed your limit. This is because the transaction fails outright if you don't have enough money in the account tied to the debit card. At least that's how it is with my VISA debit card. Your bank seems to be defeating the purpose of a debit card by overcharging your account, and then placing fees on top of it :<

It tries to charge based on existing available account amount, and if I don't have it, whatever card verifying/payment conducting mechanism is in place rejects the card right there and then.
I want to ask, did international debit card support get put in recently, or is the post simply information regarding an option that always existed? I'll email S2 if it's the latter, my debit card has failed previously, and I thought that maybe it's just that the card checking mechanism assumes it'll only receive credit card transactions (this'll remove my dependency on someone else to get it done for me).

Yo, I know you tried to make the most retard-proof solution here but you messed up.


You can definitely **** up your life with a debit card. If you buy something, ONE thing, that costs more than what you have, you're in the red (even by one cent) and they slap on a fee (an astronomical $30 fee with TD bank).

To top it off, they won't call you to tell you you've passed your limit. If you went to a mall and bought 30 individual one dollar milkshakes at McDonalds, paying for them each separately, they would charge you again, and again, the $30 fee.


Want to pay $930 for 30 dollar menu items? No.
some accounts give overdraft protection differently. some let the transaction that overdraws your account initially through, but then denies anything after it. some deny it straight up and don't let you overdraw at all. depends on the bank, your history, your account, etc. some *may* do what you just described, but i'd be hard pressed to find it. and frankly you'd have to be pretty stupid to overdraw insane amounts.

debit cards still aren't credit cards. credit cards are a loan given to you. there's a credit history that you build up with it, and is shared to other banks and businesses. those are the ones that can mess up your life.

afaik, debit card and checking account history is pretty much entirely private to your bank. the fact that the bank isn't LOANING you anything for a checking account and using your debit card - only letting you use what you've already given them - means a lot in terms of history (or lackthereof)

correct. some (most?) bank cards aren't debit OR credit cards. just cards that you can withdraw at an ATM or use at some retailers, post offices, etc.

For those without a CVV on the debit card.
Some countries ( like portugal, you have to research in your country), have a virtual credit card creation system. It is linked to your debit card and is activated at any ATM machine.

After activating it you can go to the internet to create a temporary credit card that lasts one month and is only good for one purchase. It takes the money you spent without fees (atleast round here there are no fees) from your regular bank account.

Worth taking a look there.

Also, the "fees" that apply are small (like 0.02 cents) per transaction. That's kinda normal for a international bank account.
since the EU bank gets the transactions and redirects them to S2's local bank, for that redirection you pay a small fee (a few cents).

This is bullshit. S2 says I didnt apply the correct CVV2 which I did in both cases when I tried to buy the game.

On the 10th I tried to buy it, got transaction declined but $30 had been withdrawn from my account, tried it today again (the 14th) and $30 got withdrawn again. I don't get it.

I contact my bank and they tell me that those payments are being processed by the vendor and they can't do anything about it. So basically $60 stuck in "limbo" and no HoN for me yet...

Why are they free?
Usually if you don't have enough money in your account and you try to buy something, you'll get a charged a fee. This can be $20-40. This is how they make money. If you know how much is in your account, this shouldn't happen to you.
Some of them also may charge you a yearly/monthly fee for the account, unless you deposit money frequently into it (like a paycheck), at which point it becomes free.

Take a good look at what you're currently paying your bank. Do you pay a monthly flat fee, or fees after a certain number of transactions? With the President's Choice Financial? no fee bank account2, you get free unlimited daily banking. Period.

If it's visa yes, they will automatically do the conversion for you and charge you using their own rate. which is usually a bit bellow bank rates but with a majoring factor of something between 0% to 5% of the change rate.

Why are they free?
Usually if you don't have enough money in your account and you try to buy something, you'll get a charged a fee. This can be $20-40. This is how they make money. If you know how much is in your account, this shouldn't happen to you.
Some of them also may charge you a yearly/monthly fee for the account, unless you deposit money frequently into it (like a paycheck), at which point it becomes free.


with my bank the debit card is free until you're 26 years of age so =) (guess that applies for the most banks in finland)

and after 26yr age it is like 1,5€/month

Even in Serbia you get it in a weak's time and there are little or no requirements to get it (they gave one to me as a student with no fixed income), and we have a rather tight fiscal policy (for example, you can't use Western Union or similar services to send money abroad). In some banks in some countries (in Serbia too) people consider debit cards forms of credit cards, and there's another category (pay card / platna kartica / kart płatniczych) which is what you want. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd be HIGHLY surprised to find out you're correct...

Suggestion for the guide: a problem, especially with visa cards, may be the daily limit and/or the card being locked. When I first got my visa internet card, it was locked (had to call the authorization center in my bank to unlock it) and it had a 20e daily limit, which prevented me from purchasing the account. The cure for this was, as you mentioned, talking to my bank, but it probably wont hurt to include this in the text as well.

FYI: A debit card and check card are different in South Africa - just to avoid confusion. You won't get one at 18 (you need a certain pay bracket). You can't use them online.

Well i typed everything correctly inn for stat reset but always get"your payment has been rejected"any reason why?i bought HoN account with that card with no problem even reseted my stats 1 with it,but now it wont work anymore,always rejected i checked with my bank everything is fine i have money on it,recently iv seen on forums ppl complaining they cant buy hon acc with VISA cards,im using VISA also and have the same problem,im from Europe country Croatia if that helps...anyone having similar problems?
