do crit items apply only to normal attacks or can abilities crit too? im a newb sry.

Certain abilities can crit, like scout's invis and rikimaru's blinkstrike. Spells like pyro's cannot however.

You can only critical from your regular, physical attack. Scout's Vanish does bonus damage (it does not possess a critical by itself), while Night Hound's Pounce moves him to the back of the enemy, dealing bonus damage from both Backstab (if you skilled it) and the 30/60/90/120 bonus damage from Pounce itself. Note that Scout's Vanish backstab hit can also trigger critical

Did crit ever ignored armor in DotA? That's news to me, but I can't desprove this, though.
I think the red number is the damage dealt, pre-reduction. Afterwards it is reduced by the armor, though.

Ahh... It changed in DotA. I guess a long time ago crits ignored armor. Now they are reduced. Number in red is pre-reduction amount.

Albeit a bit contradicting, both statements are true: Abilities that use your regular, physical attack can critically strike.

Crits are reduced by armor.
I believe abilities like scout's vanish and riki's pounce have the break damage build into the auto attack, allowing the extra damage to be crit upon.

No, swiftblade's ult doesn't use your normal attack on every slash, only in between. When you ult, the 3/5/7 slashes do 150-250 damage at all levels. During this time, you can also normally attack the target for your physical damage, and only THESE can crit.
