PLEASE GIVE ANY FEEDBACK I WANT IT ALL
The idea here is to help new players REALLY learn the basic's of HoN, aswell as try to breed a better community since it has such a bad rap(IMO I think its fine I love elites =p). I also want to say sorry for my grammer its not the best.
So how does this training area work?
Its pretty simple when the game goes retail and when you start HoN for the first time the game will ask you if you are a advanced player or not. If you say yes then you are giving the option to skip the TA and go straight to regular hon. If they say no then they will be taking to the TA. In the TA everything looks the same the only difference is that the games made by a bot(This can be changed to allow players to make w/e) in the TA can only be played with other people on the TA.
How does this help new players?
The only differance in it is that the games being made will have a few advanced players on each side thinking something like 2 per side. What this does iis give the newbies someone to learn from and break bad habit aswell. The Tutorial might explain about last hitting and denying creeps. But it doesn't explain everything, here is a list of things a person can gain from having advanced players in the game guiding them.
The REAL recommended Item for Heros
Neutral Pulling
Ward Placement
Lane Contorl
The Importance of a Homecoming stone!
Creep Stacking
Jungle Juking
The Point to Early,Mid,Late Game
Hero Priorty (IE dont KS a Carry)
Hero and Teamwork Synergy
Your Stats and why they matter(IE APM,Wards Placement, etc.)
Your Hero's Roll(Carry,Tank,Support,Initiation,Hard Carry)
This is why I think we need a TA for HoN it would help the learning curve of the game severely and keep the raging down a bit. After really thinking about it the learning curve from HoN isn't the problem, the real issue is what we expect from a player as far as a knowledge base of information they should knowing going into the game not being a so called "n00b".
Concerns people may have/ FAQ
How Long will I be in the TA?
You will be in the TA untill you have 10 Normal Wins. The reason for that is becuase buffering for leavers and and feedfest the amount of games it will take to grab 10 you should have learned how to played the basics by that point and honestly if you havn't then maybe HoN isn't for them.
Why Normal and not Easymode?
The reason I say normal is because that is what the game is based off of everything is based off of it the balancing to the items. Aswell as the fact that you dont truly have a Early,Mid,Late phases in a Easymode game. Note that EM games can be played in the TA but wins wont count for you getting out of it.
Why would anyone want to be a "Helper" for newbies?
Ahh this is where in game incentives can come into play everything cosmedic, nothing game changing because that is unfair. Things like In game/forums Icons, or Colored names, or TAUNT, even maybe a free stat reset since you can't get taunt anymore that would be a very good one, aswell as in game awads since they will be coming out soon. I am thinking something like 500 games as a helper awards you the use of Taunt or something.
What about learning heros?
This is a tough one. I figured while in the TA all games should be Random pick heros, so it forces the newbies to try all types of heros aswell as learn more then one. There is no point to the TA if all a person does is learn how to play Pyromancer and thats it. *Note* Its not like they dont have Practice mode and can't play around with any hero they choose becuase they will still have this.
What about my PSR?
Stats will be recorded for the newbie, but no PSR and the newbie starts fresh when they leave the TA. Also the "Helper" doesn't have any of the the stats or PSR recorded for them at all.
Why have stats if they are gonna get wiped when they leave the TA?
Good question the reason for this is just like the HON(insert random #) lobby lets people talk to each other the TA will have its own channel to let all the newbies and helpers chat with each other. Let me give you a example of a reason we have stats in the TA even thou they are going to be reseted.
Newbie says "I was in my lane when a enemy came at me and when I tried to run the pathing went the worse way I could ever think of." Now one can assume that the issue is the poor pathing in the game(Maliken is fixing it) is the problem, but lets take a look at said newbie's stats and here see he has a apm of less then 60. Now I am not saying you should have a 140+ APM and spam click everywhere but there is a reason for the rapid clicking that many people may not understand. What the rapid small movement clicks allow you to become very precise in your movements. This will allow for things like better pathing,NON-FoW chasing issues, and also for melee heros HnM. See this is just one example of what a newbie is going to learn from the TA and not have to get raged on about it.
How do we know the helper is any good at Hon?
This is done in 2 ways 1 is by PSR and yes I am serious PSR it needs to be done. Somewhere around 1650,1700+ at least and the second method is after everygame the rate will ask if the helper did any helping regardless of winning or losing and if yes then the game counts for if no then no game for them and a warning is giving to the helper that he wasn't helping and after so many strikes they can no longer help but of course we can always get a strike over turned if the newbie is being a crybaby becuase they lost or something.
What about a year from now when we have fewer new people?
Then the games will have like 3 or even 4 helpers per side if you can even help 1 person get better at the game then its doing its job IMO.
Well shouldn't these n00bs L2play/read forums/watch replays?
The short answer is yes in a perfect world they should, but lets be honest here when you got a brand spanking new game do you sit back read the instruction book, and then go look for forums for advice ALL BEFORE you jump into your game?? Nine times out of ten your going to say no becuase its a game we learn from trial and error, and in this game their is a whole boatload of it so it feels to much for some random person who just picked up the game and hasn't played a lick of dota in their entire life.
The whole point of this is to stop stuff like this : http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=110899 (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=110899) from happening.
