View Full Version : Honcast Lag - 25th April 2010.

I just want to apologise to anyone who has experienced lag or delay on any of the Honcast videos (both live and delayed) in the past hour or so. Shortly after they went live, we started getting hit for roughly 4GBIT of traffic - this is currently being mitigated and we're working to get this resolved. :)

So, apologies for any lag at the moment!

Oh, I forgot to mention - that hit was a DDOS attack on top of existing traffic.

Four GBITs per second? Ouch!

Four GBITs per second? Ouch!

Was soon mitigated down to sub 250MBIT levels, so all is good! :>

Seems a hell of a lot of effort to DDoS a fairly small company though, and it isn't like anyone has a huge incentive to do it either.

.... hmmm... Ponders who would have incentive.

If you're referring to Honcast, they're not really small in terms of their video content (although S2, as a client - are quite a bit bigger) - and if you're referring to us, allow me to laugh. :)

We've been analyzing the logs since the attack, and let's just say that the data returned is quite interesting. ;)

4GBIT isn't really the end of the world, it's nowhere near our network capacity - but it took Honcast over the cap we'd allocated to them, which is why the stream started having issues.

dl2.heroesofnewerth.com has been hit harder than media.honcast in terms of QQ'ing script kiddies - but that's to be expected :).

Someone also reported invalid whois information on honcast.com awhile back and the domain went down for a good day.

So this isn't the first time we've been 'attacked' per say.

However we did deserve the domain report, since hunter put inaccurate information in the whois when he registered it.

Luckily it didn't hurt our traffic one bit :)

Honcast is a company that gets around 110k unique hits per month, if I remember correctly. Youtube serves over 100m videos every day. I can't believe that honcast is big enough to be worth DDoSing, especially as nobody has a good reason to.

There is never a good reason to DDOS someone. Someone is probably just bored, or has a score to settle.

Remember we are talking about gamers here. I remember back in the day when kids in CS would threaten/attempt to hack you for beating them in a video game....

Minor sites get DDoSed every day, there is no such thing like "too small".

btw saying "nobody has a good reason to" makes you suspicious :>

Honcast is currently un-watchable for me. The progressive buffer thing I usually use is going way too slow and the "live" stream thing has always been bad (video pauses too much while the sound keeps going). What's going on guys? :(

You using google chrome? I have that issue with it as well. I've gone to firefox for the video

The live stream has a lot to do with your connection speed.

The progressive buffer is exactly the same as it was before.

What kind of connection are you on?

Its not even a DDoS attack. Almost every time I have tried to watch a match, the quality has been poor, and the connection terrible.

Don't blame my internet, I have no trouble streaming.

I blame your internet. If the quality is poor and you still can't stream it, it's the internet - cause the servers are no where near capacity.

Actually since you guys changed to your new player its been real crappy quality, like 1fps, it's upsetting cos gamereplays.org guys suck at shoutcasting but they have a better stream to watch. Hope you fix it soon, but you guys keep denying that it is even happening.

Also my bet is on some mymym tosser, half of them I swear are going to commit suicide because mymym is now supporting hon!

See this is whats confusing, the videos are not 1fps, the videos display fine on the vast majority of the users watching it - including for me. It looks just like in-game for me. If your lagging, its because your computer/internet can't handle the stream. We stream at a higher quality now then we did before.

The progressive option was left for users with internet that couldn't handle RTMP streams, and it is the same as it was before as far as delivery method. The only difference as far as the file and serving is concerned is the files are of a higher quality now then they were before.

Where are you located, and what type/speed of internet do you have? Also - flash player version, browser, etc?

Im sorry, but you have to much faith in your stream. If I can stream megavideo, youtube, and especcialy HQ themovievault movies with no problem, but not yours, I see a problem.

HunteR_

We're working on it. I will point out that the only factual evidence from problems have been from bandwidth. Everytime someone complains they show us their speed test.net and it's slower than 1Mbps download, which our streams are anywhere from 1.6-3.6 MBps

The progressive player works for buffering if your internet cannot handle it.

Those other sites don't use RTMP players, it streams at the exact bitrate of the video, so if you don't have the bandwidth to support it, it fails.

In that case, the progressive player is the backup.

If the video is lagging for you after you have buffered the progressive stream in your browser, this is an issue with your PC. Video playback and the rendering side of things is taken care of on your end.

Sacred - What country are you in, and with what ISP? The problem with a lot of speedtest sites (well, not a problem - per say), is that they generally use servers located very close to you, eliminating routing and international transit issues.

We will be lighting up additional EU edge machines for the lives this weekend.

I have 23,8mbps on a close server test. Live in Swe and used Stockholm as a server.
However, doing another test with Los Angeles as a server only gave 2.98mbps and that is a faraway server. Now I'm not exactly sure as to where honcast have their servers but streaming works fine for me, although the I do tend to get those video freezes while audio is fine, but that is probably my ****ed up computer that cause (to lazy to reinstall :P )

Strange. 24mbit broadband, speedtest is returning with ~27mbit, low ping, and no spikes.
