View Full Version : [Vadi] health as numbers

Vadi
08-12-2009, 10:10 AM
Disabled as of 0.1.36, pending an S2 decision on this: "because some people felt it wasn't fair and we haven't made an "official ruling" yet on whether or not we want to make that [health/mana numbers] available".

Whats this mod about
This one displays their current/max health above the hp/mana bar and under the tooltip.

Useful on all heroes, especially when playing Legionnaire.

Interesting. Now I want to try modding some myself. Is there a command to reload the ui / file so you don't have to restart the game after you do a small edit?

Perhaps you might be inclined to make a version that doesn't show their max hp value? just their current, I don't really care what their max hp is I can guage that from the bar % is there any chance of you making a version like that :)?

What's so bad about seeing the max value? I mean does it distract you or something?

Anyways nice work Vadi

That's reasonable. But first I'll need to figure out some way of automatically generating the different versions - editing 1 file and saving it as different ones leads to problems when I need to update them all.

Now all I want is a mod to show the health of towers, just like this mod, cause last hitting is insanely hard right now.

I'm not against that, but frankly, there is no mechanism in place (that I can think of too) to prevent this. Replays wont show this either.

Unless they make the client upload all the data files it has been using after a match, but they are 150mb or so

Best you can do is use it yourself! It's available for everyone.

I can't imagine it would be that difficult for them to implement some kind of checksum which makes sure the file versions on each client connecting to a ranked game are consistent with the current official versions.

I'm not sure if this is related to your mod (which is great) or not but I played a game with it turned on and got extensive FPS lag. I disconnected myself half way through the match and removed the resources003.s2z file and things began to run much more smoothly.

Just wondering if anybody else has ran into this issue of if there's something else going on with my game.

Edit: Must have been something else, running perfectly smooth now. Great mod, I'll keep an eye out for your next ones. :D

There is no mana number, it's health/max health.

If S2 used Punkbuster it wouldn't be hard at all. Punkbuster can take a snapshot of what the other players see on their own screens, which is how you can quickly catch cheaters.

Hey Punkbuster lovers, my buddy has made an image that will ban you from Punkbuster.

If you see the image and punkbuster is loaded, you'd get banned.

Also, it's not like you have to load the image while playing CoD4 as most browsers, if not all, cache images.

Stop praising PunkBuster, no anti-hack system is perfect.

I'm having some issues with this mod. It doen't show the correct numbers. :3

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/179/shot0005cuo.jpg
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/4103/shot0007kcr.jpg

As you can see, some numbers are simply cut off. Zooming in or out doesn't help anything.

Maybe expanding the black box where the numbers are will help. I'm thinking about the same size like the health and mana bars below.

Anyway, great stuff you're doing. Keep it up!

The games from s2 were always very modable. There are tons of mods and addons for Savage1+2. This will probably go the same for HoN, as you can already see quite a few mods here http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=7391.

I'm looking forward to see more of that stuff coming. :3

Yes... kinda sucks. I hope it doesn't get to the point WoW was before they nerfed addons. You would have mods that automatically dispelled debuffs (they hooked to all the movement keys, so whenever you moved it would see if it can remove a debuff).

Can anyone link me to something by S2 saying that using mods like this is ok? Also same about the camera height edit.

In C&C:ZH it was considered cheating (rightly, it gives a huge advantage) to edit the camera height. Editing gamefiles (or adding new ones) to gain an advantage is usualy called cheating. I know some games allow it (and call the cheats 'mods') but I also know some competitions do lots of things to prevent editing games that are usualy okay to edit e.g. locking the console in Counter-Strike tournements.

Avi1231
08-13-2009, 11:18 AM
e1, the whole camera thing is possible because I believe S2 is still debating how to set it permanently so they've left it so we can mess with it to give them feedback. As for the modding thing; I don't see it going away as I've heard S2 devs say that the game will be 100% moddable from the game menus to the game itself. Don't quote me as I'm not sure how true this is.

Would be interesting if it's possible to implement it in the tooltip, the distance from you to them. I don't know if you have access to the heroes positions on the map to calculate it, you may have access to the tooltip positions I would think tough, that would be better than nothing.

I've done a slightly different version of this mod, including current health/ current mana instead of the current HP/ max HP.

It has colored text (HP ind green, Mana in blue), its width is fixed to the normal hp bars width and the bugs occured with long heroe names are fixed.

Yea, sure it doesnt take any more skill to look in the lower right corner, and it doesnt really make a difference in a 1v1. However if you have a 5v5 fight, its pretty clear that you have an advantage if you can see the exact health lvls of the entire enemy team just by looking at the screen.
Without the mod you'd have to click through 5 heroes in the middle of a teamfight to see that.

That is no different than back when you had to hold down ALT in WC3 to see the HP bars above all units. There were a few mods that did it for you, and Blizzard eventually patched WC3 to make it toggle-able.

This isn't exactly the same, but it's a similar concept.

However you cant say it doesn't give a clear advantage, and S2 decided that it was too much of an advantage. Hopefully we will see an option for this implemented.

Your argument is a little faulty. Why don't we just disable health bars too? (And so on). I'm aware of your position on the mod from a later post, but it seems like the reasonable thing to do is make the game as informative as possible, not to make people have to focus on things like clicking every hero all the time. It's dumb.

The answer is quite simple. As he has already stated, it gives people who HAVE INSTALLED THE MOD an edge over those who have not. Ideally S2 would implement this mod into the game itself, as it is extremely useful and informative. I believe that they've made the right move with this one, though. You must assume that any player can play just as competitively as any other with or without the use of mods.

I would really hate to see HoN turn into something like WoW where you absolutely have to have certain mods to compete.. then when they patch the game all your mods break due to small coding changes and you can't even play the game for a week. Although, since it's still in beta, I would hope that S2 scopes out which mods are extremely popular among the community and simply implement them directly into the game.

I know what you mean, but I would hate for them to start implementing mods that I don't care for. There are some UIs that I don't care for. If they made the call on one UI versus another then that could be lame and I'm doubtful they feel like trying to put all of them in to give people their choice.

No the Health and Mana numbers is disabled by S2. Only thing that works atm is percentage of it.

if displaying the number of HP/Mana above the HP/Mana bars is cheating than there is something wrong with the game. If that is the difference between winning and losing the game should be fixed.
