Say their lineup is tempest with any 2 or more of behemoth/plague rider/glacius/forsaken archer/tree/magmus.

How can you push against a team like this? Tempest initiates and you get raped by all their aoe.

Vindi and Barrier Idol are popular choices.

Ganks in the early game and a hard carry or two. Generally speaking you should win most ganks, since they focus on winning a big fight every 2 minutes, and have long cooldowns afterward. Use your money to outfit the entire team in 1500hp or higher, with some bkb's, and try to survive the initial storm of damage.

well if they're non-targetting aoe ults, barbed armor counters them.

You could always dual push. Have 3 people push one lane and 2 push another. Use wards, and whichever lane they go to attack, fall back while the other team nets a tower kill, or at least knocks out some of the tower's health.

Ruin their farm laning phase.

:defi::vind: are both strong hero choices.

As for item choices, Tablet of Command for channeling heroes, Barrier Idol for magic damage heroes.

Can't ruin their farm laning phase cause they fit in good laning lineups.
Can't split them up cause they're pushing or defending as a team.
Shrunken head is no good cause you still get caught in tempest/tree ult. You would survive the initial barrage of aoe, but your team would be dead.

Vindi works. Barrier idol should reduce some of the damage, but I think you'd still be at a big disadvantage. I guess the best thing to do would throw wards ahead of you and initiate first.

Throw wards ahead

Vindi is good

Barrier idol works as well

Engineer ****s blinkers up

Basically get vindi and enginer and initiate on them.

Last use vindi as a babysitter for a hard carry.

Perfect Counter to AoE beatdown team:

You want at least a few of these heroes:

:swif: + :pred: + :vind: + :hell: + :mage: + :nigh: + :accu:
:swif: / :pred: are hard carries with BKB. They will eat magic damage teams.
:vind: Can press R to screw up lets, and has passive silence aura that will cause a lot of problems for aoe combo heroes.
:hell: Can press R to screw up ultimate combos, and if he takes life void and barbed armor he can basically destroy their entire team if they are ulting off.
:mage: utterly designed to destroy that lineup, he has free magic armor to whole team on a 5 second cooldown, he can gank them like crazy early game, his nuke ultimate is obscene against the nukers, and the mantra slows down the ulting combo enough that you can all dodge it or stun the hero doing it.
:nigh: has cloud to disrupt and enters with blink.
:accu: enjoys a free full-health heal when they all come combo off on him.

Items: Grab BKB for your carry, grab Barrier Idol on your support, use wards liberally so they can't portal key in. Barbed armor on as many heroes as you can.

General: Don't cluster up enough that the aoe hits everyone.

I try to metachoose the metaheroes with strong defensive metaskills including magic immunity and stuns. Also I use metapositioning to stay spread out so the entire team cant be metadamaged at once.

Have them enter first. i bet they will use all their ulti on 2 heroes. But you will have a hard time pushing ryt? get wards. Scout works for elec eyes. Vindi for ulti. If u guys aren't stupid u woulda counterpicked

The thing about AoE heavy teams is, they peter out late game because the other team can build things like :BarrierIdol: and other HP items while the damage from the spell remains constant. Hence, later game, you can withstand them much more easily.

Almost every AoE hero is very squishy, so your best bet is to play defensive and get your carry farmed. Get him to make a :ShrunkenHead: and make a :BarrierIdol: on one of your supports, then activate them in fights and laugh at the other team.

Engineers, Vindicator and Nighthound counters blinkers very well.

Vindi stops them from doing any spells at all, and NH and Engi makes sure that if they blink to you, they are silenced.

Using your brain for starters.

Space out in case of Tempest, make a Tablet of Command.

Barrier Idol for the magic damage.

:sand: (Ult = Anti-blink)
:phar: (Hellfire makes tempest cry)

They rely on the synergy between their heroes to work effectively. Picking them off one by one before engaging in a team fight (ganking) is good, and will give you the upperhand in the 5v4. Next to that Barrier Idol will supply the team with additional HP to survive their first impact, vindicator is also a VERY good counter given he stays behind and is not caught in the aoe's. If he has the opportunity to silecne at a good time he can easily destroy an entire aoe execution on their side, coupled with followup silences or stuns by defiler for example and you will win the fight. Also, defiler's ulti will continue to deal dmg even while in say tempest's ulti.
